Nashville deck lighting

This deck is all ready for use this spring, with outdoor lighting and freshly planted trees abound with blooms, welcome.

Spring is a time for renewal. The winter world around us comes to life, from the green of the forest to the newborn wildlife that open their eyes to a new world. Spring is also a time when homeowners spring to life after a long winter of staying indoors. Many homeowners set their sights on creating an outdoor oasis to enjoy time outdoors for the upcoming season. This interest can include adding outdoor living spaces such as decks, patios or even a garden trellis to take in the beauty of a newly planted landscape up close. Many homeowners plan to add a pool or spa to their home and landscape this time of year, so the structure will be “swim ready” just in time for warm weather. Whatever your inspiration or intention is for the upcoming spring, outdoor lighting will enhance your chosen endeavor. Outdoor lighting will enable you to swim longer, play longer and relax longer by giving you the opportunity to utilize your outdoor area well into the night. The time to plan your outdoor lighting comes at the same time you plan your outdoor improvement- from the very beginning.

A well-lit deck makes it all come together beautifully.

Having your outdoor lighting professional present from the planning stages along with your contractor can make a huge difference in the fluidity of your entire design. We specialize in working hand-in-hand with landscapers, and builders to make sure your completed outdoor living enhancement is a true masterpiece. The benefit from early communication within the planning means that we can run the lines for your outdoor lighting while the ground is already disturbed from the building process. In essence this makes the task more exact and also ensures no disturbances or damage is caused by waiting to call on your outdoor lighting representative after your structure is completed. This also means less wait time. When you are ready to dive into your new pool, or enjoy a cookout on your new deck, it will be “lights, camera, action” because your outdoor lighting is ready when you are.

Having the added convenience of a properly lit outdoor structure will add security, expanded enjoyment and beauty to the structure as a whole. The ambiance of outdoor lighting playing off the water adds to the imagery to make it more desirable. Fantasy often mimics reality and pool lighting is just one aspect of where the ambiance of outdoor lighting can enhance your entire experience of how your outdoor structure functions.

The House

A safe house is a well-lit house. LCA makes this possible from driveway to den.

Do you cringe when entering your driveway and garage area late at night because you know you will have to fumble to find that back door key in the minimal moonlight? Do you worry that your home will become a target for thieves while you and your family are away on summer vacation? If these scenarios sound familiar to you then Outdoor Lighting  of Nashville can help. Our lighting control automation, or LCA, technology can make you life easier and offer you the conveniences that you never dreamed possible.

One of the features that is available with our LCA technology is what we refer to as ” the driveway sensor”. This feature puts an end to coming home to a dark house and can’t find the keys situation you may be finding yourself in. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville programs the lights to automatically come on when you enter your driveway at night. Not only are you ensured safe passage right to your door, but we can program the feature to automatically turn on any multitude of chosen exterior and interior lights as well. This will safely take you from the top of the driveway to the safety of your home interior after a hard day with no worry or struggle, just peace of mind.

Another wonderful feature we offer is what we call “someone’s home”. This feature can be programmed with both your interior and exterior lights to give the appearance that someone is home, by simultaneously cutting on both indoor and outdoor lighting to mimic the pattern in correspondence with someone walking around their home at night. These lights are programmed so if the home is being watched, no one is the wiser, and your home is safe while you and your family is away having fun.

A great feature we offer using LCA technology is called the “safe entry” feature. This feature works much like the driveway sensor feature, the difference is the technology is programmed into a key fab you can place on your key chain to turn on both interior and exterior lighting at the simple touch of a button.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville proudly offers these LCA features  and many more to our valued outdoor lighting customers to make their lives hassle free, and their home safer. Remember: a well-lit home is a safer home indeed.

The holiday season is now in full swing, and many homeowners have their homes, lawns and landscapes adorned with awe-inspiring outdoor holiday lighting. Well designed and placed outdoor lighting can make your home even more stunning in the evening than it is during the day. A well-lit outdoor entertaining area, or pool and spa area means that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor into the evening without the stress of looking at the clock. The ultimate in smart home technology is lighting control.

Would you buy a car just because it offers you the convenience of a remote control ignition that could be started before you walk out the door to get into your car in the morning? You probably would not let that be the deciding factor for you to purchase a particular car. But in the same token, finding the perfect car with the perfect features to suit you would only seem more appealing when it came with all the bells and whistles, like a remote ignition.  Most consumers don’t purchase items or services just to get the extras, but when the extras are part of the available package it can truly sway you in one direction or the other.

Many analogies can be made in terms of making the decision to go with a product or service that offers you the convenience of hands-free or remote features. But until you see an individual need tied to these features personally, you may likely view them as nothing more than mere “extras”. Outdoor lighting is one such example. The technologies of outdoor lighting are advancing rapidly and with those advancements come high-tech automation that is geared to make your home safer and the available way to control your outdoor lighting much more convenient.

Control your lighting with your smart phone, network your lights!!!

Wouldn’t it be great to not have to worry about turning the lights on and off in the evening? Wouldn’t it be great to have a way to turn the lights on for your daughter who is running late returning from her movie date with her girlfriends while you are still out to dinner? How about being able to program your lights to come on and off at different intervals while vacationing to give the appearance that someone is home without having to depend on a friend or neighbor to do it for you while they are feeding Fido or watering your ferns while you are away? If an easy, convenient answer to addressing all of these situations with simplicity seems too good to be true, it actually isn’t.

The ultimate in smart home technology is lighting control.

Quite frequently I hear homeowners say ” I want a green home” or “I want a smart home”, and then they ask the big question, can I afford it? The answer in most cases is yes, because what it actually means to have a “green” or “smart” home, and what is involved is often misconstrued, and unfortunately misunderstood. The idea in itself of having a “smart home” is hot right now. The term is used loosely throughout the world of custom building, interior design, and Outdoor Lighting design. Having a smart home to many homeowners is just a fad, one that is similar in definition as going “green” or eating “organic”. Making your home smarter and greener is not a fad. People have been using lighting automation for a long time and will continue as it helps their families and their power bills.

In my field of expertise, which is outdoor lighting, the cost benefits in the long run outweigh the tradeoffs. Most green and smart homes have automated lighting. The biggest benefit of having automated lighting is the energy savings. In the case of the smart home, or green home idea, having automated lighting is more about having the lights off when you don’t need to be using them and less about having them on. For example, how many times have you come home from work  and the kids rooms lights are all on, as well as the hall, kitchen and bathroom lights, plus the TV is on…but all the kids are on the back porch? This scene is all too common in many American households, the simple abuse of energy wasted. If we could only learn how to get back what we have already lost. Since that is not a possibility, many of us are mending our ways and installing automation to help the environment and our wallet.

Lighting Control Automation Timer Nashville lighting control

LCA lighting timer.

We can never forget the safety aspect of having an automation system for your lighting control. A house that is lit is a deterrent for crime. This doesn’t mean that you must have your lights on full power all night long. It does mean that you can program your lights to come on in infrequent patterns when your away to give the impression that someone is always at home. You can even program your lights to come on at 50% power through using automation. This casts a dimmer light and uses less power but is still an adequate amount for safety and visibility at night.

Nearly 70% of what homeowners want from an automated system is lighting control. Automation isn’t necessarily “automatic”. With automation you can also manually control and  customize the technology where when you can turn on a group of things, instead of just one fixture. When you hit a switch you can design a scene to happen. You can also program the lights to come on automatically in sets to invite you into the home when you arrive in the evening.  That is  smart home technology that is simplified with the goal of controlling lighting.

Control your lighting with your smart phone

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville specializes in the latest smart home technology through lighting automation. There is no reason to buy an expensive home-automation package when all you really want to do is control the lighting. Out automation is more easy on you wallet than you might think. We also offer what we refer to as our “cafeteria” plan, where you can have your lighting controls installed a-la-carte, or in phases, with room for expansion in the future. We can even give you the capability to use your smart phone to control your smart home from remote locations as well.

Tree Lighting Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Nothing compare to the haunting beauty of tree lighting, by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

When many homeowners begin to venture into the realm of outdoor lighting and the many ways it can benefit not only the safety around your home, but also the aesthetics and beauty, they don’t take into consideration the importance of having an outdoor lighting professional design and install the lighting. A professional has the knowledge, the foresight, the creativity, the skill and the experience to add lighting in areas that can enhance your home and landscape in ways you never dreamed possible. Tree lighting is one such example of creative outdoor lighting design. Tree lighting allows you to capitalize on the multi-layering  aspect of outdoor lighting and uses the mysterious illusion of light that trees naturally provide. Using tree lighting within an outdoor lighting application can produce breathtaking as well as haunting effects.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville realizes that trees bring an element of nature into the landscape and  are important in any outdoor lighting design. The regal majesty of the tree deserves to be illuminated with the best design strategies and equipment. We have completed many outdoor lighting applications that have encompassed adding the beauty of tree lighting into the scenario and it has resulted in stunningly beautiful effects. With professionally installed tree lighting there are many choices and details to take into consideration. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville focuses on those choices of the good, the bad and the ugly of tree lighting.

Tree Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Large , mature trees with sprawling canopies make the best candidates for tree lighting

Many types of light can be used in tree lighting, one of which is low voltage lighting. Low voltage lighting can result in lighting that is subtle to intense, depending on the wattage you use to illuminate a particular area. When using low voltage lighting you usually only have to go up about 30′ into the tree. This will shine a radius of light of approximately 15 to 18 feet. Depending on how intense you want the light itself to be, we generally start off with a 20 watt flood light. This will produce a subtle “moon lit” look. To achieve more intense light, we would extend the light up to 35 feet or 50 feet’. If you are using the light to define an area where you spend a lot of time, for example a horseshoe game pit, then you want to use a much brighter light to define the area more clearly.

Halogen lights can also be used in tree lighting. Halogens are great to use if you want to add a “tint” to the exuding glow, because you can add a tinted lens to the halogen fixture to achieve a myriad of effects with tinted lighting. Another up and coming light we are using more frequently in tree lighting is LED. LED is becoming more and more popular in tree lighting because of the longevity of the LED bulbs. They require less maintenance because they last so long and don’t have to be replaced as often as other lights, plus they are super energy-efficient.

Hackberry tree

The majestic sprawling branching of the Hackberry tree

Since tree lighting requires the installer to actually climb the tree to install the lighting, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville always keeps the safety of the technician in the forefront, as well as the integrity of the tree itself. We use proper equipment that will not scar or damage the tree making it vulnerable to disease and parasites. We also have experience and knowledge as to which trees are good for tree lighting. With any tree you are considering lighting, the lights should be able to be placed  in a fairly clean shooting lane, trees that are thick and dense, such as magnolias do not make good candidates for tree lighting for this reason. Trees like pines and other evergreens are not ideal for tree lighting either because of the lack of limbs available to achieve drama and effect. Trees such as a Hackberry and oaks tend to have sprawling limbs, and can make ideal candidates for tree lighting.

Tree lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

The ethereal illumination of proper tree lighting using multi-layering throughout the trees canopy

To achieve maximum effect from tree lighting it is ideal for the limbs of the tree to hang over a large surface area. You don’t want super thick foliage to snuff out the light. Shining the light down through some foliage is good and will create a haunting, dappled effect, but too much foliage is not good. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville feels the best effect is achieved when the light is shining through a different tree’s canopy, with the light shining through to a limb about 8 feet below you will achieve the most stunning effect using multi-layering of light. It is also advantageous to have the capacity to use a limb that hangs over the target point of the area or item you are illuminating. Since this is not always the case we can use light to go off the tree, at an acute angle coming straight down to achieve results. As with any lighting scenario you never want the light placed where if can shine into a person’s eyes. We also use tree lighting to light patios and walkways by throwing the light through foliage for a dramatic effect.

In a perfect world, the trees within our homeowner’s landscapes would already be perfectly placed to accommodate tree lighting. As this is not the case, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville uses experience, knowledge and design expertise to create stunning lighting effects with whatever mother nature has placed before us.

Outdoor Lighting Nashville-Westhaven

Outdoor Lighting accentuates the beauty and architecture of this home

If two words could sum up the lighting application  on this home in Westhaven they would have to be entrancing and ethereal. This home is situated on a corner lot and is close to the neighborhood clubhouse. Several angles to illuminate and a complicated roofline made this home a design challenge. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville took the challenge in stride and the end project of this home at night is truly breathtaking.

Side view of home in Westhaven

Side view which shows how lighting accentuates the height and depth of this home

We accentuated the width and the height of the home by using well lights placed strategically so they cast a side glow and  singled out certain architectural features of the home. Well lights are one of the best lights to use when focusing on architecture. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville uses these type of lights in many of its designs, and precision placement ensures the homeowner is not met by the light intruding in through a window. We also strive to focus on the effect that a light produces, rather than the light itself. This is why discreet placement of fixtures is key.

Westhaven home during the day

This daytime photo shows the complicated roofline The roof line of this home in Westhaven presented some interesting challenges for us. From the curb side looking at the house we did up lighting and from the house side we did downlighting. We also placed lights on the upper gable of the home as well on the second story to illuminate the columns on the second floor. Roof line lighting is challenging in itself, but Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville went a step furtherNotice the down lights on this tree to provide moonlighting, or shadow lighting

By attaching lights to the trees on the side of this home. We used up lighting as well as down lighting to illuminate not only the trees but the homes facade as well. Lighting in the trees also served to cast moon lighting, also known as shadow lighting onto the walkway below. This application adds safety, beauty, depth and dimension to this area.

These copper stake lights age to a beautiful rustic patino over time

Not a single stone was left unturned when it came to beautifully illuminating this home. We even added soffit lights in the covered patio. These soffit lights are tied into the LCA (lighting control automation) of the homes lighting system to add worry free, no hassle operation to the list of positives this home has.

The whole effect the lighting gives is one which you don’t want to turn away from. Even during the day the lighting still entrances you, notice the beautiful aged patina of the copper path lights.
