Even though the winter weather outside may be frightful, the holiday lights we are beginning to see around town are so delightful. In towns and suburbs all around the country the Christmas rush is on. This includes designing and installing your residential and commercial holiday lighting display in time for the upcoming holiday. Outdoor holiday lighting is an important element of decorating for Christmas. A well decorated home or business is not complete without beautiful Christmas lights. In order to create a cohesive theme or mood  for the holidays it’s important to include outdoor Christmas decorations in the scenario, and the most effective and enchanting way to do this is by adding outdoor Christmas lighting. One facet of outdoor holiday lighting is to decorate select trees within your lawn and landscape to reflect the beauty and spirit of Christmas.

Tree lighting for the holidays by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Tree lighting for the holidays by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville.

The origins of the lighted Christmas tree trace back to the 17th century and in 1882 electric lighting was introduced as a viable way to illuminate the interior Xmas tree. The same traditions that make lighting and decorating your interior Christmas tree can carry out to lighting exterior trees for the holidays as well.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been breathing the magic of the holidays into trees all over the Nashville area for over 20 years. One of the most enchanting lighting elements used in  our exterior Christmas tree lighting is called tree wrapping. Wrapping exterior trees with holiday lights adds class and refinement to your landscape during the season and can also create a focal point of interest to your holiday lighting design.

The key to a well-wrapped exterior Christmas tree is based on the same theory used to expertly wrap a holiday gift to place under your tree for the holidays. Careful and even placement of lights, making certain to leave no gaps, or empty spots is crucial in creating the desired effect. In certain circumstances we have  even employed the assistance of a crane to make sure each and every light is wrapped  in perfect precision around the trunk and branches of the tree which you are illuminating.

Christmas lights in large tree

Christmas lights in a singular, large tree wthin the landscape can create an elegant effect

Outdoor holiday tree lighting such as tree wrapping can be used in a variety of presentations. One way to create a dramatic impact is to wrap multiple trees along linear areas of your landscape such as a fence line, or driveway border. The effect of multiple wrapped trees illuminated in perfect unison can result in an enchanting “winter wonderland” effect that will make your guests feel like a kid again. Choosing a single conifer candidate to wrap with lights can also result in a breathtaking effect in your landscape as well. One beautifully lit tree can become the star in your outdoor lighting design, because even with outdoor holiday lighting, less is sometimes more.

LED Ribbon Lights are Weaving Romance into Every Lighting Application

Nashville pool waterfall lighting

Create a shimmering waterfall effect.

Outdoor lighting applications are a great way to create a mood of ambiance and romance within the landscape. One way that Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville utilizes light to create a mood enhancing effect is through the use of LED ribbon lighting. This ribbon lighting is often used in recreational setting such as pool and water feature lighting, deck lighting and under bars and shelves in outdoor kitchen and bar areas, and under built-in seating and benches on patios and decks. Ribbon lighting exudes a very even, soft and romantic light. The added positive attribute to LED ribbon lighting is since it is LED, it is as easy on the environment and pocketbook as it is on the eyes.

LED ribbon lighting is used in and around pools and water features and is completely submersible and is very effective in delivering even light with an effect that is unforgettable. They are often used under the ledges of waterfalls to add a distinctive glow to the water that spills out from the water feature, creating an unforgettable result.  Can you imagine a midnight swim in your pool under the glow of these dreamy lights?

We also offer colored LED ribbon lighting for specialized applications.

With the installation of LED ribbon lighting your outdoor structures will become a relaxed place of refuge when entertaining, or just enjoying an evening at home. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville proves it is “good to fool with mother nature” in terms of tree lighting

Tree Lighting Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Nothing compare to the haunting beauty of tree lighting, by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

When many homeowners begin to venture into the realm of outdoor lighting and the many ways it can benefit not only the safety around your home, but also the aesthetics and beauty, they don’t take into consideration the importance of having an outdoor lighting professional design and install the lighting. A professional has the knowledge, the foresight, the creativity, the skill and the experience to add lighting in areas that can enhance your home and landscape in ways you never dreamed possible. Tree lighting is one such example of creative outdoor lighting design. Tree lighting allows you to capitalize on the multi-layering  aspect of outdoor lighting and uses the mysterious illusion of light that trees naturally provide. Using tree lighting within an outdoor lighting application can produce breathtaking as well as haunting effects.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville realizes that trees bring an element of nature into the landscape and  are important in any outdoor lighting design. The regal majesty of the tree deserves to be illuminated with the best design strategies and equipment. We have completed many outdoor lighting applications that have encompassed adding the beauty of tree lighting into the scenario and it has resulted in stunningly beautiful effects. With professionally installed tree lighting there are many choices and details to take into consideration. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville focuses on those choices of the good, the bad and the ugly of tree lighting.

Tree Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Large , mature trees with sprawling canopies make the best candidates for tree lighting

Many types of light can be used in tree lighting, one of which is low voltage lighting. Low voltage lighting can result in lighting that is subtle to intense, depending on the wattage you use to illuminate a particular area. When using low voltage lighting you usually only have to go up about 30′ into the tree. This will shine a radius of light of approximately 15 to 18 feet. Depending on how intense you want the light itself to be, we generally start off with a 20 watt flood light. This will produce a subtle “moon lit” look. To achieve more intense light, we would extend the light up to 35 feet or 50 feet’. If you are using the light to define an area where you spend a lot of time, for example a horseshoe game pit, then you want to use a much brighter light to define the area more clearly.

Halogen lights can also be used in tree lighting. Halogens are great to use if you want to add a “tint” to the exuding glow, because you can add a tinted lens to the halogen fixture to achieve a myriad of effects with tinted lighting. Another up and coming light we are using more frequently in tree lighting is LED. LED is becoming more and more popular in tree lighting because of the longevity of the LED bulbs. They require less maintenance because they last so long and don’t have to be replaced as often as other lights, plus they are super energy-efficient.

Hackberry tree

The majestic sprawling branching of the Hackberry tree

Since tree lighting requires the installer to actually climb the tree to install the lighting, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville always keeps the safety of the technician in the forefront, as well as the integrity of the tree itself. We use proper equipment that will not scar or damage the tree making it vulnerable to disease and parasites. We also have experience and knowledge as to which trees are good for tree lighting. With any tree you are considering lighting, the lights should be able to be placed  in a fairly clean shooting lane, trees that are thick and dense, such as magnolias do not make good candidates for tree lighting for this reason. Trees like pines and other evergreens are not ideal for tree lighting either because of the lack of limbs available to achieve drama and effect. Trees such as a Hackberry and oaks tend to have sprawling limbs, and can make ideal candidates for tree lighting.

Tree lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

The ethereal illumination of proper tree lighting using multi-layering throughout the trees canopy

To achieve maximum effect from tree lighting it is ideal for the limbs of the tree to hang over a large surface area. You don’t want super thick foliage to snuff out the light. Shining the light down through some foliage is good and will create a haunting, dappled effect, but too much foliage is not good. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville feels the best effect is achieved when the light is shining through a different tree’s canopy, with the light shining through to a limb about 8 feet below you will achieve the most stunning effect using multi-layering of light. It is also advantageous to have the capacity to use a limb that hangs over the target point of the area or item you are illuminating. Since this is not always the case we can use light to go off the tree, at an acute angle coming straight down to achieve results. As with any lighting scenario you never want the light placed where if can shine into a person’s eyes. We also use tree lighting to light patios and walkways by throwing the light through foliage for a dramatic effect.

In a perfect world, the trees within our homeowner’s landscapes would already be perfectly placed to accommodate tree lighting. As this is not the case, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville uses experience, knowledge and design expertise to create stunning lighting effects with whatever mother nature has placed before us.

Historic home in Murfreesboro, TN makes new history with a lighting installation by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

olp nashville 915 e main st.

Historic residence in Murfreesboro, TN

With a historic home like this one in Murfreesboro, TN the past speaks to us through its colonial revival architecture and character of yesteryear. The owners of this 1926 home, which is registered on the national register of historic places recently contracted Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville to add lighting to the already profoundly stunning home.

Colonial revival style homes are characterized by crown pediments,  elaborate front entries most often seen with the use of columns, and symmetrical front facades. It is an honor to be asked to accentuate this homes already beautiful presence.

nashville column lighting garden lighting

You can barely see the well lighting that illuminates this beautiful corner column wrapped by nature with beautiful green ivy

The homeowners wanted a well-rounded design that complimented their landscaping and a design that required as little maintenance as possible. We used a combination of low maintenance and energy-efficient LED lighting, regular architectural lighting, landscape lighting  and moonlighting strategically placed throughout the landscape to cast an ethereal glow. Our LED’s carry a lifetime warranty. The system will still require an annual visit to make sure everything is running smoothly.

LED outdoor lighting Nashville with smoke colored acrylic lens

The homeowners wanted to showcase the homes colonial revival architecture in a relaxed, more subdued manner. We were able to achieve this by using well lights with low-wattage bulbs and using a “smoke” acrylic lens color on the well lights. The result is elegant and understated, the perfect coupling for the homes details to shine through.

The landscaping around this residence is as breathtaking as the home itself. We wanted to make sure that the landscaping got the attention it deserved, but in a soft manner, letting the planting speak for themselves. We applied moonlights to compliment all the beautiful Hosta lilies within the shade garden. We also applied focal moonlighting to a large tree in the back as well.

This home is a masterpiece in itself, the lighting application had to be on the same level to bring out the homes architecture and gorgeous grounds in a tasteful, understated elegance. It looks like 1926 was a great year for architecture and 2011 is a good year for elegant outdoor lighting.

LED outdoor orb pendant lighting sets the mood

Outdoor Pendant globe or orb light

Outdoor Lighting Perspective of Nashville stays in tune with the latest design trends in outdoor lighting in order to better fulfill the needs of the ever-changing needs of our clients. We recently had a client come to us which owns a local winery and asked if we could install pendant globe/sphere lighting within the trees around the “tasting” or gathering area of the winery for him.

These lights come in 10″, 12″ and 16″ and are available in white as well as clear acrylic. The bulbs themselves are the super efficient LED lights that last an enormous amount of time. The effect these lights impose on a setting is stunning. Though these lights are contemporary in design, when strung for example in trees along a gathering or picnic area, they make the space warm and inviting.

Pendant lighting

Outdoor LED pendant lighting when lit

Envision yourself at the winery. You are sampling various wines and having  hors d’œuvres  and mingling with friends in conversation. The sun begins to set and above you in all the surrounding trees are these heavenly pendant lights. The glow they emit, paired with their shape and placement within the trees only elevates the mood of you and the people around you.

It is our goal at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville to be able convey a mood and effect through our outdoor lighting. These pendent lights are LED and can be used near ponds and water features for am ethereal and whimsical effect. These same lights have moved up into our trees and hung along outdoor structures for that same effect. These lights would be perfect in holiday lighting applications as well, you will be so enamored you may want to decide to leave them up year round.

Moonlighting in Nashville’s Belle Meade Anyone?

The stately trees that grace this driveway for our customer in Belle Meade are perfect for moonlighting

The art of moonlighting is a creative medium in itself. The type of illumination that comes from moonlighting gives off an ethereal effect that cannot be duplicated by any other lighting technique. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville was recently selected to install moonlighting for an owner in Belle Meade.

The homeowner wanted to illuminate the driveway. Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville we try to avoid having a fixture out in the open because not only does it become a tripping hazard it is susceptible to damage from mowers, aerators, edgers and other machinery. We suggested moonlighting the large trees that grace the driveway, this would effectively light the long driveway and give a soothing, romantic light as well.

The homeowner allowed  John Groce of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville  to serve as contractor on the job, thus we were able to line up the electrician and the irrigation company to  under the sidewalk. The electrician had already been there previously and ran power to the trees. Sandra Nichols Landscaping was the landscaper on the job and we worked hand in hand during the progression.

Landscape lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Since the electrician had run power from the house to the trees there is a receptacle at the trees. These are done on all 120 volt, line voltage and is a different fixture which uses a ballast to power the bulbs. The bulbs are all ceramic metal halide. Ceramic metal halide are the same type of bulbs used in jewelry and grocery stores and are coveted for their high score on the CRI (color rendering index). The light itself is still low-wattage, at only 39 watts, they still put out an enormous amount of light. As an example of the amount and quality these lights emit, you could hold 30 pieces of blue string in all variations in your hand, and in the noon day sun you could clearly see each variation from string to string. The same clarity is apparent under the moonlighting as well.

We are planning on using the current timer the customer has inside the home to hook in the moonlights for control. We had previously completed the lighting in this customers backyard as well.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville worked hand-in-hand with Sandra Nichols Landscaping

Just as we had previously worked with this homeowner before, we enjoyed working with her once again on this moonlighting application. We want to commend Sandra Nichols Landscaping as well. This very stately driveway on this very stately property is now complete with the ambiance of the moonlighting, another job well done!

When Building an Outdoor Structure Call Your Lighting Specialist First

Deck post lighting sconce

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville we can’t emphasize how important it is to call in your lighting company before you build your outdoor structure. Most of the time your wish is  to make  sure your wiring is  hidden instead of exposed. Once construction on your structure is completed it is very difficult to hide the wiring. If your lighting company is informed ahead of time , they can make certain that everything is neatly hidden from the naked eye, and still ensure the integrity and safety of the lights themselves.

When our customers let us know before they begin construction on their outdoor structure we can customize their lighting on a whole different level, that’s why it is important to not wait until the structure is completed. For example with a new deck, we can make sure conduit is run throughout the entire decking system and have it pre-wired to accommodate your chosen fixtures. This approach ensures that no additional drilling is necessary, and you get a more secure fitting fixture in the process.

Our half-moon wall sconce light for decks shown here in copper

When we talk about deck lighting there are a wide variety of fixtures that we really like to use. All of our fixtures are high quality and come in your choice of copper, nickel or antique brass. One of which is the half-moon deck light. The product description in our catalog for the half-moon light says it all…” This understated but powerful light casts the industry’s widest indirect wash from its perch upon deck posts and retaining walls. The half-moon sconce creates rich ambient light, and the beautiful copper finish weathers the element with grace”.  Our fixtures can also be powder coated, dipped and oxidized. Oxidation will turn them a rich deep bronze, which by far is our most popular finish in deck lighting. We also carry step lights which are installed in the riser. We carry one with a Louvered  face plate and also a scoop face plate.

If a deck is in your future, remember to call your lighting specialist before you begin so they can work with your builder. If you are looking for a lighting specialist, give Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville a call to discuss your lighting needs.John Groce Outdoor Lighting Perspectives Nashville (615) 373 – 0638

Controlling indoor lighting with Lighting Control Automation

Outdoor stair lighting Nashville

Lighting along these steps is not only beautiful but offers a safety factor.

Mary Lynn Crozier has a ritual every time she comes home at night.  When she enters the front door, she immediately turns on the foyer lamp.  Then she goes into her living room and turns on the two sofa lamps.  From there, she heads to the kitchen and switches on the recessed light over the sink.  She finally heads to the study and clicks on the overhead ceiling fan and light.  All of this before she is able to take her coat off.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all of these lights could be controlled from one, conveniently located switch when you enter your home? Aside from the considerable ease of having a single control center, the energy that is saved in the form of electricity and light bulb life can be significant.

So what can Outdoor Lighting Perspectives do for Mrs. Crozier?  Many people think that our expertise is only in outdoor applications. Using the dedicated wiring already in your home, an attractive, inconspicuous module and timer can be installed into your wall that can control any or all of your lighting.  It’s an efficient way to save time and energy and can give any homeowner that feeling of security the minute you set foot in your front door.

When to Install Outdoor Lighting

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

So, you’ve decided the time has come to enhance the appearance of your property and home.  The list has been made and you are in the planning phases.  Outdoor lighting seems paramount and the next step is deciding when the project should begin.

If you are considering landscaping, this is the first phase that needs to be addressed.  Landscape design should be formulated by an accredited professional.  Once the designer is chosen and the plans have been approved, contact an outdoor lighting specialist.

The lighting designer should not only work with the customer, but also with the landscape designer that has been hired.  The two can work together and strategize the best means to bring your property to the best of its potential.  Also, if considering paths and retaining walls, sleeves should be implemented to provide avenues for low voltage wiring.

To prevent cut lines, the lighting company you select should install their product at the end of the project.  Regardless of the time and care your plant installer possesses, the odds are high that multiple lines will be cut.  To prevent repeat trip and labor charges, always complete landscaping first.
