Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville makes sense and sensibility out of the illustrious realm of LED outdoor lighting

Franklin TN LED residential outdoor lighting

The outdoor lighting at the stunning home in Franklin, TN serves as a perfect example of how you can benefit from LED outdoor lighting.

As some novices to the world of outdoor lighting would argue, a light is a light. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to tell you nothing could be farther from the truth. Since outdoor lighting is all we do, we take the quality of the lighting itself very seriously. We’ve been designing and installing outdoor lighting in Nashville for over 20 years. During that time we have marveled at the advances in outdoor lighting technologies, especially when it comes to LED outdoor lighting. LED outdoor lighting has become one of the most sought after outdoor lighting genres in the business and accounts for over half of the commercial and residential installations we do. Keep in mind, that just because an LED says LED, doesn’t mean all LED’s are created equal. Unless you are a seasoned lighting professional, the lingo used to explain the different quality of LED light, and what the various “colors” associated with LED lighting mean can be overwhelming. We are here to explain the differences in LED lighting in terms everyone can understand.

Kelvin scaleIs this rocket science, and who is Kelvin?

The quality of LED lighting is measured by color temperature. Color Temperature is a measurement that indicates the degree of color being emitted from a light source in degrees Kelvin. Much to the surprise of what the term implies, it is not a measure of temperature at all but rather a way to gauge the varying degrees of the visible color spectrum that emanates from a light source. The method behind the measurement of light began in the late 1800s, when William Kelvin experimented with heat and a block of carbon. As the he heated the carbon he noticed that it produced an array of colors as the temperature was increased. The heated carbon block first produced a dim red light and eventually a bright blue-white glow as higher temperatures were achieved. He noticed that with lower temperatures, most of the energy was converted to heat. This same principle is at work when you look into a fire as it turns from gold to blue as the heat increases.

The optimum temperature range for outdoor LED lighting is between 2800-3000 degrees Kelvin. For the LED light, there are mainly 3 kinds of white colors – warm white, natural white and cool white. These three LED’s chart the difference between a softer, warmer form of illumination (warm white light) and a sharper, colder effect (cool white). Kelvin scale measures the “color” range of LEDs. As the Kelvin goes up the light will appear more orange, whereas an increased Kelvin will make the illumination from the LED appear bluer. It is really a simple rule within a range of measurement. The most opportune aspect of good LED outdoor lighting will ensure the object you are illuminating is as close to the appearance of natural light as possible.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy-efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

Ironically, the differences in colors perfectly match the different atmospheres and how they pertain to our needs. Usually, warm white is good for indoors, as it keeps the room you are illuminating cozy and inviting. Cool white is a good choice for outdoor lighting or anywhere where you might want sharper definition and illumination, but not too cool as this will give the space a utilitarian feel.

This quest for the perfect color of LED outdoor lighting is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been able to achieve with our LED outdoor lighting designs. What sets our LED’s apart from the rest is our exclusive high quality fixtures made just for Outdoor Lighting Perspectives locations, and the use of Cree LED lighting technologies. Cree has revolutionized the lighting industry with high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting. The Cree advantage begins with mixing the light from red and Cree unsaturated yellow LEDs – among the highest-performing LEDs on the market. Every Cree fixture is then color tuned as a complete system for the utmost consistency in performance. The result is beautiful white light with superior color accuracy and consistency, Cree LED’s also use significantly less energy than traditional lighting.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville urges homeowners with outdoor lighting to proceed with caution when mulching and sprucing up this Spring

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville beautiful outdoor lighting

Our outdoor lighting installations utilize safety as well as beauty in your landscape.

When most people think of outdoor lighting they envision a beautiful home and landscape enhanced by the soft, romantic illumination of professional outdoor lighting. It is true that the aesthetic appeal of outdoor lighting is important, as is their ability to enhance function of your landscape in the evening. One often overlooked aspect of outdoor lighting that is just as important is the safety of the outdoor lights themselves.Safe outdoor lighting is a top priority at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville. Letting a novice install your outdoor lighting can often lead to safety hazards such as overloaded circuitry and incorrect installation. This is why it is important to have an outdoor lighting professional install your outdoor lights. Aside from choosing a reputable, experienced outdoor lighting professional there are other safeguards that need to be addressed from the position of the homeowner which can affect the safety of your outdoor lighting.

This lens cover has been damaged by allowing debris to pile atop the light.

One of the number one fire hazards that pose a threat in outdoor lighting is the absence of lens covers, especially on well lights. As we look ahead to the coming spring, homeowners will be busy sprucing up their yards by trimming bushes, flowers and trees as well as refurbishing their mulch and pine straw in their landscape. Spent clippings from plant material are often dried out, and once it has been trimmed will dry out quickly. It is important to discard these clippings and keep them away from all outdoor lighting to avoid the risk of fire. When applying new mulch or pine straw it is also crucial to avoid covering your outdoor lighting. Covering your outdoor lighting will not only make your lighting look bad, it can also present a risk of fire from contact with the dry mulch. This is the reason  having lens covers on your well lights is so beneficial. The purpose of lens covers is to keep any foreign material out of your well lights that could potentially pose a fire hazard, including plant clippings and mulch.

This image clearly illustrates the importance of lens covers.

Even with lens covers it is still possible for outdoor lighting to become a fire hazard if covered completely by landscape materials. The material can cause the light itself to heat up and melt. It is a good idea to perform a once over in your landscape beds once your new mulch has been delivered, and again when applied to make sure no lighting has been buried underneath. It is also important to convey to your landscape manager who is overseeing your mulching or trimming  the presence and location of your lighting to ensure no lights get buried.

As lighting systems transition from quartz halogen to LED, mulch-related heat buildup problems and issues will decrease. If you are new to outdoor lighting and are considering adding them to your home and landscape in the near future, choosing an LED system will decrease the risk of heat buildup and fire because  LED lighting produces very little heat when in use because it contains no filament. The light LED produces come from a process called electroluminescence, where a substance is acted upon by an electric field that produces a cold light. Not only does LED pose less of risk of causing fires, it is also dramatically more energy-efficient, more durable, and leaves less of a carbon footprint on the environment. It doesn’t get much “cooler” than that!

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville’s BB-02 fixture goes where no fixture has gone before

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Home sweet home is ready for your arrival with our expanded outdoor lighting fixtures and technologies.

Professional outdoor lighting is an art. Part of perfecting that art is choosing the appropriate fixture to gain the greatest benefit within the area you are illuminating. We have found that the curves and unique angles of many of today’s modern homes and landscapes can present challenges when it comes to the unity of outdoor lighting designs. For this very reason, our exclusive manufacturer has come up with the solution to this problem. Our improved  BB-02 copper direct flood/spotlight can fit into those spaces that other lights cannot.

This miraculous little light is commonly known as “the big stick” because of its resemblance to a stick. With its streamlined design, this light fits the needs for areas that really need a smaller bullet light. The fixture is designed in LED it carries all the thermal attributes of our larger LED fixtures which ensure a long life. Since the fixture is designed in LED it only uses a 10 watt PAR LED bulb which is the equivalent to a 50 watt with standard bulbs. Less wattage means more energy savings and that is always a good thing. These new LED PAR bulbs now come with a new grey anodized finish. By anodizing all the aluminum parts they can protect the bulbs even better than with powder coating. The result also delivers a more sleek and durable look.

Known as “the big stick”, the BB02 is slender and streamlined and offers a 30 degree beam spread.

The BB-02‘s slim design allows landscape friendly installations in multiple landscape designs.  The BB-02 is Available in different heights to work perfectly when placed in grasses. Some of the areas that the “big stick” would be perfect for include decorative ornamental grasses within the landscape, as well as other shrubs and plants that have cumbersome dimensions to work with. Paths lined with borders of variable height foliage and perennials will also benefit from the use of the  BB-02. The list of areas this fixture is perfect for go on and on.

Not only does the fixture look the part, it delivers a 30 degree beam spread which means this little light can go places  no light has gone before and illuminate those areas  beautifully to boot.  As with every quality fixture within the family of those used here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville, this light will make adding more beauty and definition to your professional outdoor lighting design a breeze.

Using LED outdoor lighting technologies means less is always more

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy-efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

I revel in the amount of new products that feature the newest forms of LED lighting. Not only does LED make for an interesting selling point because it is the hot new trend, it also means you are getting the dependability of LED technology with your product. Case in point; I recently had to purchase a new refrigerator because mine went on the blink and due to its age it was more economical to just replace it. As I strolled through the endless lines of refrigerators lined up like soldiers going into battle, I noticed that most of  the higher end models included LED lighting. The salesman was quick to point this out on each model I showed interest in. He explained the benefits of LED lighting and how the appliance would be more economical to operate by having LED lights. I chose a nice model with plenty of space and LED lights in 3 locations within the fridge portion which will deliver maximum visibility on those midnight snack runs. On the way home that evening I began to scrutinize on the life expectancy of the refrigerator itself and realized the LED lighting will still be working long after the appliance has lost its ability to keep my milk cool and my ice cream frozen. This technology is a testament to the effectiveness of LED lighting as a whole and can be seen in many genres of products on the market today.

LED in my new fridge

LED lighting makes my new fridge even cooler

This same dependable lighting technology is being used in many products. The Mercedes C-class automobile was one of the first to use LED lights in its models in 2009. In an effort to make the cars more attractive to potential customers and to keep up with the LED lighting trend Mercedes added the lights to their facelift models and integrated the lights into the front bumper daytime lights. On the American home front the new kick-back of the classic Chevy Camaro even offers an interior package on their 2012 and 2013 models that includes advanced LED light pipe technology to give the interior of the cars cabin an inviting glow.

From appliances to cars, LED is all around us. The technology is evolving so rapidly that LED is becoming a part of everyday lives on many levels. Being in the business of outdoor lighting, we are able to keep up with the newest advances in LED outdoor lighting technology and at the pace we are seeing this technology unfold. Our requests for LED outdoor lighting packages are becoming more abundant every month. Part of the reason for the added interest is because LED is more within reach for the consumer. Our LED outdoor lighting designs offer beauty, longevity, durability, long bulb life and most of all savings in operational costs. LED lighting also replaces standard lighting with greener technologies that reduces our carbon footprint on the environment.

Outdoor lighting perspectives of Nashville even offers LED holiday lighting for your home and landscape.

LED outdoor lighting customers feel the biggest bang when they get their power bill because LED lighting only costs pennies to run compared to traditional outdoor lighting operating costs. The technology uses less energy and this reflects on your electric bill each month. Less energy consumption, less bulb replacement, less negative impact on the environment all equal positive savings for the consumer. Obviously, when it comes to LED lighting less is always more.

Contact Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville to learn more about our LED outdoor lighting fixtures and our LED outdoor lighting designs. In some cases we can even retro-fit your existing system to accommodate the new LED technology as well.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville – 20 years in Nashville and going strong!

OLP Nashville Bob Lyons I and II

Here is the Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville and B&B Manufacturing family, Bob Lyons Sr. and Bob Lyons Jr. are the two gentlemen wearing black on the front row.

Reflecting on how we got to where we are today is an important part of what makes our business so special. Many of you probably don’t know the humble root of how Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville got to the point it is today.

Outdoor Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Outdoor Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is also B&B Manufacturing. The B&B in B&B Manufacturing actually stands for Bob and Bob, which are Bob Lyons Sr. and Bob Lyons Jr. A father and son team that started their company back in the 80’s. B & B Manufacturing a privately held company that manufactures commercial and residential outdoor lighting  fixtures

BB3 well light

The BB3 well light is used to uplight the front of architectural facades. It is one of our signature architectural lighting fixtures.

exclusively for the Outdoor Lighting Perspectives franchises.  The story begins when a fellow named Bob Cook (yes, another Bob) starting making landscape lighting fixtures from plumbing parts. These fixtures weren’t fancy, but were very functional. One particular fixture was the icebreaker. We now call this light a directional flood light known as our BB12 outdoor light.  It was the dawn of our new up light which proved to be a winner because up until that point lighting professionals were using inside bulbs not designed for an enclosed MR16 outdoor fixture as up lighting, this caused sockets to fail because it overheated and it also did not work with moisture.  Bob came up with the solution and the BB3 fixture was born, which led to the BB12 as well.

The dawn of outdoor lighting design began for B&B when they found a better way to efficiently light the MR16.

The wondrous thing about the BB3 was it did not require a socket, and it had an ideal beam spread. At the time GE made a bulb that was completely water submersible, which overcame the dilemma of moisture wreaking havoc on the bulb. The combination of our BB3 with the water submersible bulb was an idea before it’s time that set the standard for B&B manufacturing.

Now, in 2012 professional outdoor lighting companies are using an LED version of the same bulb that we used it in an outdoor up light. The weakest point of any LED bulb is its capacitor that it uses and the heat at which the components of the bulb operate.  Another step for us was to come up with an LED bulb that burns cooler, thus we came up with our LED PAR bulb that uses a cooler burning tantalum capacitor. Since heat can affect the life expectancy of any LED bulb, our PAR LED bulb has an almost unlimited life since it is not affected by as much heat. Our PAR bulb can be used in both an enclosed and open fixture and is also completely submersible.

The result of ingenious design is the BB12, a standard among Outdoor Lighting Perspective locations.

Our newest addition to the B&B arsenal is the SLUGGER LED replacement bulb. It uses the same technology as the PAR LED does but runs at 4 watts instead of the 6 watt that the PAR bulb does. A small bulb that served as a giant step for our LED outdoor lighting fixtures.

We are committed to improve upon our LED bulbs and are staying on the LED information highway by offering you the newest technology at a reasonable price. Our philosophy here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville and B&B is to provide you with the best quality outdoor lighting fixtures, expert outdoor lighting design and installation with personal service to match.

Our approach to a greener workplace promotes sustainability, which affects our world on a global level.

Nowadays, everyone you talk to is discussing the importance of living in a world where sustainability practices are key to preserving our environment on a global level. Small changes in the way you live and function on a daily basis can impact the entire planet in the big scheme of things. This includes the way you function on a professional level as well. Discussing the importance of sustainable living practices is one thing, but ” talking the talk” and “walking the walk” is another. Outdoor Living Perspectives of Nashville is instilling sustainable practices in our everyday professional duties in an effort to make a habit out of trying to better our lives and the lives of our grandchildren in years to come.

We offer our clients a way to invest in tomorrow through the use of “green” outdoor lighting technologies such as LED and LCA, (lighting control automation), so we,along with our parent company, and our local manufacturing company ( B&B Mfg.), are practicing what we preach about sustainable living practices. We are operating under a “green” approach to our workplace by recycling materials such as copper fixtures. We also recycle all the paper in our office and our goal is to allocate a paperless system in the near future by incorporating tablets with each of our field workers. We are also moving towards an automatic bill pay system so we save paper by not having to send out invoices each month. We are installing solar panels on our building as well, to reflect the importance of less impact on the environment by reducing power consumption.

We are installing solar panels on our building to decrease energy usage in our workplace, and lessen our direct impact on the environment.

By working in a field of expertise, such as outdoor lighting, that now has the technology to offer homeowners a more sustainable living product, such as an upgradeable LED bulbs that never get discarded in a land-fill but can be refurbished to reuse, it is a real “no-brainer” to begin at the core of our business. The workplace. Hopefully, each employee, delivery-person, and individual whom frequents our office will have these sustainability practices “rub off” on he/she and take a little piece of that realization back home with them creating a ripple-effect of sustainability initiatives to live by.  Remember, that what we do today, will affect tomorrow.
