There is more to the “E” in LED outdoor lighting than just what the name implies

LED architectural and facade lighting in Belle Meade by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is defined as a semiconductor light source. LEDs create light, as outlined by the Edison Tech. Center,  “by electroluminescence in a semiconductor material. Electroluminescence is the phenomenon of a material emitting light when electric current or an electric field is passed through it,  this happens when electrons are sent through the material and fill electron holes. An electron hole exists where an atom lacks electrons (negatively charged) and therefore have a positive charge. Semiconductor materials like germanium or silicon can be “doped” to create and control the number of electron holes. “Doping” is the adding of other elements to the semiconductor material to change its properties. By doping a semiconductor you can make two separate types of semiconductors in the same crystal. The boundary between the two types is called a p-n junction. The junction only allows current to pass through it one way, this is why they are used as diodes. LEDs are made using p-n junctions. As electrons pass through one crystal to the other they fill electron holes.” They emit photons which result in light! LED is available in many different colors. Different elements are used to create LED’s variance of color, such as gallium arsenide in making red and infrared LED, gallium nitride in making blue LED,  and Yttrium aluminium garnet in making white LED’s.

The Color of Quality

Some might argue,  that a light is a light. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to tell you nothing could be farther from the truth. Since outdoor lighting is all we do, we take the quality of the lighting itself very seriously. We’ve been designing and installing outdoor lighting in Nashville for over 20 years. During that time we have marveled at the advances in outdoor lighting technologies, especially when it comes to LED outdoor lighting. LED outdoor lighting has become one of the most sought after outdoor lighting genres in the business and accounts for over half of the commercial and residential installations we do. Keep in mind, that just because an LED says LED, doesn’t mean all LED’s are created equal. Unless you are a seasoned lighting professional, the lingo used to explain the different quality of LED light, and what the various “colors” associated with LED lighting mean can be overwhelming.

In the quest for the perfect color of LED outdoor lighting is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been able to achieve with our LED outdoor lighting designs. What sets our LED’s apart from the rest is our exclusive high quality fixtures made just for Outdoor Lighting Perspectives locations, and the use of Cree LED lighting technologies. Cree has revolutionized the lighting industry with high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting. The Cree advantage begins with mixing the light from red and Cree unsaturated yellow LEDs which are among the highest-performing LEDs on the market. Every Cree fixture is then color tuned as a complete system for the utmost consistency in performance. The result is beautiful white light with superior color accuracy and consistency.

Energy Efficient, Economical and Effortless

Aside from the advantages of our consistent color LED’s that enhance your home and landscape, our LED’s are also beneficial in other ways. These include energy-efficiency making them more economical to operate than traditional outdoor lighting. LED lighting is more energy-efficient and leaves less of an impact on the environment than other types of outdoor lighting.  It can save a homeowner thousands in energy costs over the LED’s lifetime. In addition, since they contain no glass components, they are not vulnerable to vibration or breakage like conventional bulbs and make the perfect lighting for outdoor applications. LED lights are free of toxic chemicals. Most conventional fluorescent bulbs contain a multitude of materials such as mercury that are dangerous for the environment and make disposal dangerous. Since they contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable, they will help you reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third. LED is safer in many regards too because it generates light from cool burning technology, and it uses less wire to install properly. Our LED outdoor lighting is also longer lasting and requires less frequent replacement making their operation seem effortless! These attributes prove that the “E” in LED means much more than just what the name implies.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is busy preparing our local commerical venues for the holiday season

Our trained installers placing the lighted starburst onto the trees which line the entrance to the Mall at Green Hills in honor of the holiday season.

The time is quickly approaching when Nashville residents will be out in full force doing their holiday shopping. Maybe you have already begun gathering the items on your holiday gift list for friends and family this season. While you are out and about during the holiday shopping season have you ever really thought about how the decorations and holiday lighting on display affects you? What would the holidays be like void of any remnant of holiday cheer as you stroll from shop to shop making your selections? The answer to this question is just that, void. Holiday lighting results in visitors that are excited and their ‘sense of place’ is established upon arrival  to a venue and is reinforced inside.

According to research, holiday decorations bring in earlier holiday shoppers to stores and keep them shopping longer. This same data showed that spending for 2012 picked up dramatically during the 4th quarter. This is usually the norm for most retail business to accrue a large percentage of their sales during this time. Holiday time is the most fruitful time of the year for many businesses, including restaurants, food and beverage stores and even sporting goods stores, just to name a few of the areas that feel the impact of 4th quarter sales. With all this in mind, now is the time to make sure your holiday lighting display is in order. You don’t want to wait until the last minute.

We are installing 25 lighted starbursts and 120 strands of LED mini lights to the trees that line the entrance to the mall. We cannot wait to photograph evening shots of the trees once the installation is completed, so stay tuned for more to come…

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville makes sense and sensibility out of the illustrious realm of LED outdoor lighting

Franklin TN LED residential outdoor lighting

The outdoor lighting at the stunning home in Franklin, TN serves as a perfect example of how you can benefit from LED outdoor lighting.

As some novices to the world of outdoor lighting would argue, a light is a light. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to tell you nothing could be farther from the truth. Since outdoor lighting is all we do, we take the quality of the lighting itself very seriously. We’ve been designing and installing outdoor lighting in Nashville for over 20 years. Keep in mind, that just because an LED says LED, doesn’t mean all LED’s are created equal. Unless you are a seasoned lighting professional, the lingo used to explain the different quality of LED light, and what the various “colors” associated with LED lighting mean can be overwhelming. We are here to explain the differences in LED lighting in terms everyone can understand.

Kelvin scaleIs this rocket science, and who is Kelvin?

The quality of LED lighting is measured by color temperature. Color Temperature is a measurement that indicates the degree of color being emitted from a light source in degrees Kelvin. Much to the surprise of what the term implies, it is not a measure of temperature at all but rather a way to gauge the varying degrees of the visible color spectrum that emanates from a light source. The method behind the measurement of light began in the late 1800s, when William Kelvin experimented with heat and a block of carbon. As the he heated the carbon he noticed that it produced an array of colors as the temperature was increased. The heated carbon block first produced a dim red light and eventually a bright blue-white glow as higher temperatures were achieved. He noticed that with lower temperatures, most of the energy was converted to heat. This same principle is at work when you look into a fire as it turns from gold to blue as the heat increases.

The optimum temperature range for outdoor LED lighting is between 2800-3000 degrees Kelvin. For the LED light, there are mainly 3 kinds of white colors – warm white, natural white and cool white. These three LED’s chart the difference between a softer, warmer form of illumination (warm white light) and a sharper, colder effect (cool white). Kelvin scale measures the “color” range of LEDs. As the Kelvin goes up the light will appear more orange, whereas an increased Kelvin will make the illumination from the LED appear bluer. It is really a simple rule within a range of measurement. The most opportune aspect of good LED outdoor lighting will ensure the object you are illuminating is as close to the appearance of natural light as possible.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy-efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

Ironically, the differences in colors perfectly match the different atmospheres and how they pertain to our needs. Usually, warm white is good for indoors, as it keeps the room you are illuminating cozy and inviting. Cool white is a good choice for outdoor lighting or anywhere where you might want sharper definition and illumination, but not too cool as this will give the space a utilitarian feel.

This quest for the perfect color of LED outdoor lighting is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been able to achieve with our LED outdoor lighting designs. How do you know when your outdoor lighting is beyond repair?

Frequently I am called out to do a service call on existing outdoor lighting. We’re happy to service any lighting system – even if it’s not ours. Not only do people call us for help when their fixtures are in dire straits, they also frequently reach out to us about constantly maintaining their outdoor lighting system.  People call us for those things all the time.

Since there are poorly manufactured lights in circulation, it is inevitable to find fixtures lying on the ground. We can’t do anything about broken fixtures but we often can fix other problems, whether it be a blown bulb or poor socket performance.  Surprisingly, these outdoor lighting “face-lifts” are inexpensive and put a lot of life back into your system. The picture is a great example of a poorly manufactured fixture that is beyond repair.

Copper Path Light by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives

Copper Path Light by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives

Copper Path Light by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives

Our path lights are made of solid copper. Yes, this is the crème de la crème of lighting materials. In Nashville, we are both the manufacturer and the local franchise.  However with 50+ franchises around the country, these fixtures are not as unattainable as you might think. We use copper because it is maintenance free and can endure all weather conditions.  Copper naturally oxidizes.  This patina process provides a natural barrier to the elements.  The facts are aluminum deteriorates with corrosion, brass pits without periodic polishing, and stainless steel, believe it or not, stains.  Copper simply stabilizes as it ages.

We are happy to give an honest assessment of whether or not your system is beyond repair. Our goal is to see if the system is serviceable. If so, we service it. We are also professional lighting designers so we will always provide you with our honest feedback and design ideas.

Lighting design series: Find the architectural breaks

commercial outdoor lighting fixture

commercial outdoor lighting fixture

A lot of my customers ask me about how I design outdoor lighting. Next to relationships with customers, it’s my second favorite part of my job. To some extent, I feel I should keep this a secret because I don’t want to work myself out of a job. But, I also know although absolutely critical, lighting design is just part of an outdoor lighting job. Without professional knowledgeable installation, high quality fixtures and expert maintenance, the design would be moot.

So, here is the first in an ongoing lighting design series. Every day I work with prospective business and homeowners to design outdoor lighting for their homes, landscapes, outdoor living areas and buildings. I had an interesting design consult this week with a hotel.

The owner’s primary motivation for outdoor lighting was to gain more visibility from the highway.

Hotel facade picture

View of the hotel from the highway

Here’s a view of the side of the hotel that sits on the highway. You can see that along the top of the building there are commercial outdoor lights that point down onto the parking lot for parking safety. But those down lights don’t illuminate the structure.

One idea that might come to mind is shining commercial grade spot lights at the facade to light it up like the 4th of July. The problem with super bright spot lights is the feeling they create – viewable but “blown out”. A structure looks blown out when the light becomes the focus instead of the structure it’s illuminating.

The other problem with flood lights is they obstruct the vision of the hotel guests. When you shine a generalized and bright light toward a facade, this creates a blinding effect to the guests who are looking out the window at night.

Commercial outdoor lighting on architectural breaks

Commercial outdoor lighting on architectural breaks

So what we want to do is use lights near the base of the building the shine upward but specifically not light under the window columns. These are the architectural breaks. The architectural breaks are the vertical lines, if you will, created by the architecture that lend themselves to illumination. So on this facade, that would be the concrete areas between the windows and of course the left and right edges of the building. I always want to light the far left and far right side of the structure to give the structure breadth.

Here’s a picture of a job we did in Nashville.

I love to look at pictures of commercial and residential applications and give some design ideas. Please feel free to comment on this post or email me pictures for ideas.
