Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is making the evening landscape more welcoming for man’s best friend

Outdoor lighting provides an endless plethora of benefits to homeowners. These benefits encompass enhancing the beauty and curb appeal of the home and landscape while promoting a safer more secure home. Did you ever think about the ways outdoor lighting enhances the time our furry friends spend outdoors too? For most of us, our dog is considered a member of the family– not just man’s best friend, but everyone’s best friend — with that in mind, outdoor lighting can make those evening trips outdoors safer and more enjoyable for both you and your pet.

If you are a dog owner there is no escaping the inevitable need for evening walks. For some pet parents, taking a stroll after dark seems easy, but if you live in a secluded area with limited lighting or lots of traffic, this may be a source of trepidation. For homeowners who have a fenced  backyard, or designated area of their landscape to turn their dog out into instead of walking their dog, a dark backyard is still a source for concern for the safety of your pet. This can be even more of a concern in rural areas where wildlife frequents your property. The addition of outdoor lighting such as path, sidewalk and various landscape lighting can aid in making evening visits outdoors more enjoyable and safer for both you and your pet. Outdoor lighting will allow you to return from evening walks into a well-lit environment allowing for relaxed, safer entry back into the home. For pets that have specified areas within your landscape, outdoor lighting will make the time they spend outdoors in the evening safer because of the extended visibility it offers both you and your pet, also giving you peace of mind.

Nashville landscape lighting and path lighting

Path and landscape lighting aids in more secure travel when venturing outdoors in the evening with your pet.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville specializes in outdoor lighting designed to enhance the lifestyle of every member of the family, including our four-legged family. From landscape and architectural lighting to make accessing the backyard a relaxed experience for you and your pet, to path and sidewalk lighting allowing well-lit passage on the way to and from your evening walks. We take your comfort and safety seriously.

We have put together an assortment of great tips sure to put a little spring in your step and ensure that your evening strolls outside of your property with your dog are a ritual you both look forward to :

  • Bring a flashlight — Once you leave the security of your well-lit landscape to come home to make sure you have a dependable source of illumination for you and your pet while on the go. Portable flashlights are great, as are other sources of illumination, like headlights and lanterns. Remember you should always leave your house with a device that will help you observe the paths and roads ahead. Some of the newest pet-friendly sources of illumination include blinking LED lights,  light sticks or illuminated dog collars, all of which can be a great way to maintain visibility for both you and your dog!
  • Bring your cell phone — Before you throw on your jacket and fasten a leash to your dog’s collar, be sure you have your cell phone on hand. According to Dogster.com, this is also a great way to maintain a sense of time while you’re outside and  reach out to others in case an emergency occurs.

  • Make you and your pet easy for others to see with reflective gear — Wear reflective gear to aid in making you and your dog more visible to people driving. This includes walking on a sidewalk in a gated community or while near a busy intersection, it’s important that others are able to see both you and your pet. There’s a variety of reflective gear that will make it easier for those passing by to spot you, including  reflective shirts, full body gear, illuminating collars and even leashes.
  • Enjoy the moment — Leave distractions at home and enjoying this time to bond with your pet. While you may be tempted to plug-in your earbuds as you head out with your dog, this will inevitably distract you. Instead, try to be as observant as possible while you and your pooch enjoy the fresh air and time together outside.

Stunning outdoor lighting makes a grand entrance even grander at this Nashville estate

In Nashville, there are many beautiful custom-built, custom designed homes that some would describe as estates or mansions. Among homes of this prestige, outdoor lighting must be as prestigious in its design and execution to enhance the multitude of precise design details that go along with a home and landscape this timeless. Mansion lighting, or estate lighting takes an experienced lighting professional that can turn a residence that is already breathtaking during the day into a property that is even more breathtaking at night.

Nashville_mansion_lighting

Professional outdoor lighting can add an air of refinement and prestige to any home

Illuminating a mansion or estate can be a daunting task when you take into consideration the  size and elaborate architectural details of a residence of this size. From larger lots with more landscape details, larger entrances, longer driveways, and more windows, the list of focal points to illuminate can become quite long. We start all our lighting designs with assessing the home’s height, width, texture and depth to illuminate and enhance the home’s facade and architectural details. We then move into designing the landscape lighting and using proper placement and selection of fixtures to make gardens and landscaping come to life under the blanket of the night sky. Most of the time, homes of this prestige and quality contain pools, and custom outdoor structures which we pay special attention to enhance  through illumination along with the home and landscape. An outdoor oasis combined with a pool, spa or hot tub becomes an “at home spa” under the trance of pool and water feature lighting.

Pool lighting paired with mansion and estate lighting this beautiful makes you want to dive right in

When we get the opportunity to add illumination to an already stunning property the effect and ambiance outdoor lighting creates mingled together with an illustrious upscale home  is a match made in heaven. We combine all the facets of quality outdoor lighting in order to present homeowners of mansions and estates a  truly unique and custom lighting design. We can incorporate all the parts of your home that are worthy of making heads turn. Along with making your home more beautiful, outdoor lighting also gives you added security and peace of mind. According to many law enforcement agencies research shows that a well-lit home is less likely to be broken into. Well lit homes deter would-be robbers and give you peace of mind that your home is safe under the veil of night.

Along with designing and installing outdoor lighting that can be enjoyed every day, we also specialize in lighting some of the Nashville areas most prominent homes for the holidays. Our holiday outdoor lighting can add warmth, and classic refined style to your estate or mansion. holiday OLP garland

A mesmerizing holiday outdoor lighting display that inspires you is unforgettable.

The holiday season is now in full swing, and many homeowners have their homes, lawns and landscapes adorned with awe-inspiring outdoor holiday lighting. Many people only choose to illuminate their home and landscapes for the holiday season, foregoing a chance to capture the ambiance and feeling that year-round outdoor lighting can add to your most precious of investments. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to make your property more magical each and every evening, not just during Christmas, with outdoor lighting.

The addition of lighting a specific location focuses your eye on that location and makes it the focal point. Much the same can be said about professional outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting can be used to define the lines, architecture, and nuances that make your home’s beauty and unique characteristics shine through. Well designed and placed outdoor lighting can make your home even more stunning in the evening than it is during the day. Landscape and garden outdoor lighting can make your backyard and landscape appear to be a lush outdoor oasis, giving rise to beauty not seen in the light of the daytime. Expertly designed and executed outdoor lighting can give the appearance of light dancing from one beautiful focal point to the other. Along with the beauty that comes along with having professional outdoor lighting, there are other benefits as well.

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting can create ambiance year round.

In many homes across Nashville, the homeowners have access to a virtual playground in their very own backyards. From pools and luscious spas that offer a place to renew your soul, to gorgeous patios and outdoor porches that serve as gathering spots for your family and friends. Without proper outdoor lighting these extensions of outdoor living and recreation cannot be enjoyed to their fullest extent. A well-lit outdoor entertaining area, or pool and spa area means that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor into the evening without the stress of looking at the clock. Your backyard will not only be well illuminated, adding the element of outdoor lighting to areas such as pools and spas creates an ethereal ambiance that only beautiful lighting can provide.

Outdoor lighting also paves the way to more fun and playful opportunities to enjoy your landscape in the evening. With outdoor lighting the gang can throw the pigskin around during halftime on that Monday night game and not have to worry about tripping over your prized rose bushes or passing it in the dark. With outdoor lighting your outdoor activities can extend well into the evening and expand your outdoor living enjoyment.

A well lit pool and surround means safety and beauty

Having the added benefit of a safer home is also great incentive to install outdoor lighting at your home year round. Not only does a properly lit sidewalk welcome guests to your door with hospitality, it also reduces the risk of falls due to low visibility. A well-lit exterior also lessens the risk of a robbery or break in. Our outdoor lighting can be programmed to operate on a regular schedule to ensure you are never left in the dark. In the same token, that same lighting control automation technology we use to program your outdoor lighting timer can also be programmed to give the appearance that someone is always home – even if you are on vacation in a tropical paradise thousands of miles away. Our lighting control technologies can be accessed by a simple touch of a button via your smart phone. Safety, convenience and peace of mind are just a few of the benefits of having professional outdoor lighting.

Historic home in Murfreesboro, TN makes new history with a lighting installation by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

olp nashville 915 e main st.

Historic residence in Murfreesboro, TN

With a historic home like this one in Murfreesboro, TN the past speaks to us through its colonial revival architecture and character of yesteryear. The owners of this 1926 home, which is registered on the national register of historic places recently contracted Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville to add lighting to the already profoundly stunning home.

Colonial revival style homes are characterized by crown pediments,  elaborate front entries most often seen with the use of columns, and symmetrical front facades. It is an honor to be asked to accentuate this homes already beautiful presence.

nashville column lighting garden lighting

You can barely see the well lighting that illuminates this beautiful corner column wrapped by nature with beautiful green ivy

The homeowners wanted a well-rounded design that complimented their landscaping and a design that required as little maintenance as possible. We used a combination of low maintenance and energy-efficient LED lighting, regular architectural lighting, landscape lighting  and moonlighting strategically placed throughout the landscape to cast an ethereal glow. Our LED’s carry a lifetime warranty. The system will still require an annual visit to make sure everything is running smoothly.

The homeowners wanted to showcase the homes colonial revival architecture in a relaxed, more subdued manner. We were able to achieve this by using well lights with low-wattage bulbs and using a “smoke” acrylic lens color on the well lights. The result is elegant and understated, the perfect coupling for the homes details to shine through.

The landscaping around this residence is as breathtaking as the home itself. We wanted to make sure that the landscaping got the attention it deserved, but in a soft manner, letting the planting speak for themselves. We applied moonlights to compliment all the beautiful Hosta lilies within the shade garden. We also applied focal moonlighting to a large tree in the back as well.

This home is a masterpiece in itself, the lighting application had to be on the same level to bring out the homes architecture and gorgeous grounds in a tasteful, understated elegance. It looks like 1926 was a great year for architecture and 2011 is a good year for elegant outdoor lighting.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville makes sure your outdoor lighting fits to a T

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Maybe you’re not quite old enough to remember the early 80’s risqué’ blue jean advertisements of Brooke Shields telling the world that nothing comes between her and her Calvins. Even today, designers of denim tout about how they have the perfect jean to fit any figure…long or short legs, small or large hips, and all body shapes and sizes. The same can be said for what type of outdoor lighting is the best “fit” for you home. One size does not fit all.

When you speak the language of outdoor lighting you take into consideration your homes length, width and depth. For example on an artist’s palette you may have hues of red, blues and greens.  The amount of each color the painter will use on his canvas will depend on what he is painting. For instance, if he is painting a landscape, chances are the artist would use predominately greens. Would the artist be able to use those same greens to achieve a rendering of an autumn sunset? Of course not, that is why this analogy shows that the same lighting design and application does not work on homes with different dimensions or architectural styles. Each home is different and individual and should be treated as such when it comes to designing the outdoor lighting.

Outdoor Lighting Perespectives of Nashville uses architectural lighting to accentuate this homes distinctive features

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville uses architectural lighting to accentuate this homes distinctive features

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville designs an outdoor lighting application that accentuates your homes individual “curves”, just like a good pair of jeans on your body should. A small ranch style home would have a much different outdoor lighting design than a larger custom-built home would. A typical ranch style home is a good package to focus on the width of the home, because in most cases a ranch reflects a longer design. With this style of home you want to use outdoor lighting to add depth, so it’s not a one-dimensional flat canvas. A good lighting design would incorporate smaller trees closer to the home and the outward landscaping of the home to accentuate the homes curves as well. Creating depth is not always about the features of the home but also using a homes unique landscaping to create depth.

Outdoor Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Outdoor Lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Proper outdoor lighting on larger, custom-built homes begins with focusing on the width of the home as well. In most cases this type of home will not be flat across the front. With custom homes you want to stretch the width with the use of light to accentuate any peaks, eaves or arches and maximize their uniqueness and beauty. Illuminating across the front of the homes exterior and accentuating the homes height is key to maximizing the home’s beauty as well. We like to pick out vegetation to the left and right of the home so it flanks the home and frames the entire picture. This type of design also lets people know that when they drive past your home it looks even larger with properly placed and applied outdoor lighting. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville also uses architectural features such as stonework, retaining walls or any specialty element to create shadow and depth. One crucial thing that most often gets overlooked in outdoor lighting illuminating the dormers on a home, this is important in allowing your outdoor lighting application to achieve  height and balance.

severance-gazebo

This gazebo comes to life at night within the landscape with outdoor lighting

When it comes to lighting backyard scenarios we generally consult with the homeowner to find out where they spend most of their time in the backyard. We will sit on the patio or at a table on the covered porch of a prospective client and take different aspects of the landscape and vegetation into consideration in order to frame and light these areas with a room type atmosphere, so your eye never really stops. We can even illuminate certain trees to accentuate their colors, like a Japanese maple, or create a canopy by lighting tall trees. The effects that can be created by lighting a backyard landscape can be breathtaking. We always strive to get that “perfect fit” for you with all aspects of lighting your property.

Moonlight and Westhaven Make the Perfect Pair Thanks to Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Outdoor Lighting Nashville-Westhaven

Outdoor Lighting accentuates the beauty and architecture of this home

If two words could sum up the lighting application  on this home in Westhaven they would have to be entrancing and ethereal. This home is situated on a corner lot and is close to the neighborhood clubhouse. Several angles to illuminate and a complicated roofline made this home a design challenge. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville took the challenge in stride and the end project of this home at night is truly breathtaking.

Side view of home in Westhaven

Side view which shows how lighting accentuates the height and depth of this home

We accentuated the width and the height of the home by using well lights placed strategically so they cast a side glow and  singled out certain architectural features of the home. Well lights are one of the best lights to use when focusing on architecture. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville uses these type of lights in many of its designs, and precision placement ensures the homeowner is not met by the light intruding in through a window. We also strive to focus on the effect that a light produces, rather than the light itself. This is why discreet placement of fixtures is key.

Westhaven home during the day

This daytime photo shows the complicated roofline The roof line of this home in Westhaven presented some interesting challenges for us. From the curb side looking at the house we did up lighting and from the house side we did downlighting. We also placed lights on the upper gable of the home as well on the second story to illuminate the columns on the second floor. Roof line lighting is challenging in itself, but Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville went a step furtherNotice the down lights on this tree to provide moonlighting, or shadow lighting

By attaching lights to the trees on the side of this home. We used up lighting as well as down lighting to illuminate not only the trees but the homes facade as well. Lighting in the trees also served to cast moon lighting, also known as shadow lighting onto the walkway below. This application adds safety, beauty, depth and dimension to this area.

These copper stake lights age to a beautiful rustic patino over time

Not a single stone was left unturned when it came to beautifully illuminating this home. We even added soffit lights in the covered patio. These soffit lights are tied into the LCA (lighting control automation) of the homes lighting system to add worry free, no hassle operation to the list of positives this home has.

The whole effect the lighting gives is one which you don’t want to turn away from. Even during the day the lighting still entrances you, notice the beautiful aged patina of the copper path lights.

Should you do outdoor lighting yourself?

Outdoor lighting Nashville

Outdoor lighting Nashville

Is outdoor lighting really that complicated? Is it one of those things you should do yourself? Well, in deciding what things you should really do yourself, there are a couple scenarios to look at.

1)      Going to a home store to purchase and install yourself

2)      Doing internet research to purchase and install yourself

3)      Having someone do it for you

With option 1, here are the pros and cons. You’ll certainly get a better price. On the flip side, you could be standing in the aisle for a long time reading boxes and still make an uninformed choice. Then, you have to do the installation yourself.

With option 2, here are the pros and cons. The research will likely be easier and you might get better information online. Online, you can see reviews from other real people instead of just reading the marketing literature and getting the opinion or “expertise” from one sales rep who may or may not make a commission on your purchase. Then, you still have to do the installation yourself.

With option 3, you will benefit from the years of experience of the lighting designer and can enjoy a glass of wine while they work. Any way you look at it, you’ll have a better product, someone to call with questions and likely both a warranty and a service plan.

But, there can be one more option. This option is “do it yourself with our help”. In this option, you can do the research and purchase online but have the expert come out and install the product. Or, you can ask the expert what to buy and have them install it for you. This is often an unadvertised option but can really be the best.

Installing outdoor lighting is difficult, requires lots of knowledge, and can be fraught with perils if not done correctly including the risk of fire, the risk of cutting important power and other lines, and many other perils. Call an expert and ask them if they have an option 4. It could be the very best option.

Core drilling to install landscape lighting

Brick column lit by flush mounted core-drilled well light

Brick column lit by flush mounted core-drilled well light

The ease of installing outdoor lighting varies from job to job.  Often the architecture or the aggressive growth habits of plant materials can heed one’s progress.  Recently I put a design together for a gentleman who was building a Mediterranean style home.  The design for the front facade was pretty straight forward, but the pool area was a bit tricky.

A series of columns surrounded the pool deck encompassing the perimeter, providing a sense of security.  Since columns are architectural strengths, this was obviously something I wanted to showcase.  Most of these were easily accessible due to a sweeping plant bed, but a few of the columns ran directly into the concrete pool deck where no fixture could be submerged.

Surface mounting a fixture on a column is a last resort and can seemingly be obtrusive to the eye.  One card played in our favor.  Although the hardscape directly joined the concrete on the pool side, there was a slim plant bed running behind the column that would allow us an avenue for our low voltage wire.  With the help of a licensed core driller, we were able to access the concrete and from there drill out into the plant bed running behind the column.

Though on this particular job core drilling worked in our favor, I have seen many projects halted and many lighting designs rejected because there wasn’t a proper way to illuminate an outdoor living space.  The moral of the story is aim before you shoot.  Make sure proper sleeves are installed before the mason lays the pool deck. You never know when you might want to add additional audio equipment, grilling equipment or even an outdoor gas fireplace. It’s good to prepare with running some lines when you do the initial build.

It is better to have plenty of options, as opposed to…well… none.

Outdoor lighting for a guest cottage or another building on your grounds

You may have an exterior building on your grounds that has great architectural flair or that it visited often at night. It could be a guest house, a pool house, a shed of some sort or another building.

Guest house outdoor lighting

Guest house outdoor lighting

In this picture, the building on the right is a guest house. The building on the left is utility house. They are both beautiful structures. While the homeowner might not have added outdoor lighting for the utility house, he wanted lighting for the path to the guest house.

Guest house outdoor path lighting

Guest house outdoor path lighting

One of the best fixtures to use for lighting a path is what we call a path light. You want the light to cast a gentle glow downward on the path and adjoining landscaping. You don’t want any overly bright light to obscure night-time vision and lose the romantic effect that you have with such beautiful structures on a property.

Copper path light fixture picture

Copper path light fixture

As you can see here, the copper path light is a great fixture because not only does it blend seamlessly into the pine straw when new, but it also patinas beautifully over time to continue to blend naturally into the surrounding areas.

While we could have done architectural lighting on the beautiful building, it’s important to only design lighting to fulfill the homeowner’s needs. The need was to allow for safe walking on the path in the evening for guests.

In this case, landscape lighting was the best fit for the job.
