The venue recently unveiled a magnificent expansion, doubling its size to 350,000 sq. feet of galleries, classrooms, retail areas, storage and special event space. The building is situated in the heart of Music City’s epicenter close to the honky-tonks of Broadway and across the street from Bridgestone Arena.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is truly honored to have been asked to install the tree lighting along the entrance to this amazing venue! We used a technique called tree wrapping to add elegance and beauty to this already impressive locale. Though this genre of lighting may appear to be solely for the holidays, the venue intends to keep the lights year round. Such is the trend to use permanent tree lighting in many commercial buildings and even in residential backyard settings.

Qualified Remodeler recently conducted  a survey that solidified what we already knew at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville—that homeowners still put a big emphasis of Importance in lighting their outdoor living and entertaining areas. The main and largest part of their backyard—the patio or deck—are #1 on their list since that’s where they spend the most time with family and friends. The components that make up these areas and pull it all together to bring practicality are next on their hit list, including the steps, seating areas, railings and the post caps. It makes perfect sense that deck rails can easily be seen to safely guide visitors up and down to the lower levels; and that post cap illumination would provide a soft glow that is not only attractive, but useful in terms of providing a spread of ambient light.

Qualifieed Remodeler Survey Results

The deck and patio are the core centerpieces of any backyard, and that’s where most of the fun happens including dining, grilling, relaxing and family parties. It makes perfect sense that our clients are looking to enhance this area since it’s the hardest working area in your outdoor oasis. We want our decks to not only look fabulous, but we want the lighting to offer the convenience of helping us with visibility so that we can extend the hours of use well into the evening.  We can give you targeted task lighting that helps you see when at the barbecue, overhead café style lighting that can be draped across a large breadth of space that looks cool and brings plenty of light to do virtually anything under, and we can ensure all the key features of your deck and patio (such as steps) are lit to provide you the safety you need to make them work to their fullest.

Here in TN fall is the reason for the season, and a great time to consider adding tree lighting to your landscape

Maple in the fall

Maples, which are native to Nashville, offer some of the most vibrant fall foliage of all trees.

I cannot speak for everyone, but fall is the season that makes me thankful I live in Tennessee. Our autumns offer some of the most beautiful examples of Mother Nature’s majesty with the changing of the leaves. Tennessee is noted as having some of the most spectacular fall foliage of anywhere on the map. Tourists come from all over the country just to see our colorful display. There are even mapped tours such as the Natchez Trace Parkway that offer some of the most beautiful renderings of fall foliage as anywhere in the U.S.  Along with the color of the forests, many of those same trees that exude fiery color each fall are found in many of the landscapes of those who reside in Nashville. Being a resident means you have to travel no further than your backyard in order to see the ambers and crimsons of the season. This very reason is enough to consider introducing a way to extend the hours you are able to drink in this beauty by adding professional tree lighting into your landscape.

Many of these native trees are abundant in our landscape designs and make a perfect starting point for landscape lighting. Along with the trees that are native to our area, ornamental trees are also popular landscape choices and offer visual interest with the changing season as well.

Our many tree lighting techniques add drama and a focal point in your yard. Each tree we light is enhanced by the subtle elements involved in properly illuminating it without overpowering it. We use a combination of up lighting to accentuate the height and majesty of the tree.  We also include well lights, wide-angle bulbs and moonlighting to accentuate the width a depth of the tree we are lighting. Each tree is treated as an individual. We take the tree’s special characteristic into consideration to decide which lighting element will work best. Our technique uses a soft wash of romantic light to bring out the distinct beauty of each specimen.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville Southern tree lighting

Nashville maple tree lighting

This Maple tree is a Nashville native, and would make the perfect candidate for tree lighting in the landscape.

Among the many memorable things the South is noted for, its glorious variety of native trees has to be at the top of the list. From the spanish moss that covers the Live oaks of the eerily beautiful streets of  historic Georgia, tothe Bald Cypress trees that line the great Mississippi. Tennessee has a wide variety of native trees that are a pleasure to look at too,  such as a plethora of Oaks, Maples, Dogwoods, Poplars and Birches. Many of the trees that thrive naturally in Tennessee our among the favorites used by homeowners as a foundation to their landscape. Along with the native specimens, a wide variety of ornamental trees can also be seen in the yards of Tennesseans.

Nashville ornamental weeping tree lighting

Weeping tree varieties, like this unique miniature weeping evergreen look beautiful under a soft wash of light.

With the beauty that surrounds us in the abundance of specimen conifers here in the South, it is a no-brainer that trees deserve their place in any outdoor lighting design. We think that tree lighting is one of the most subtle ways to light your landscape without overpowering it. Tree lighting can also create a focal point of interest in the landscape. Trees like Crepe Myrtles, Japanese maples, peeling River Birches, and weeping varieties of trees make a phenomenal impact in the landscape under the soft wash of outdoor lighting. Ornamental trees  also add visual interest throughout the changing seasons. A Crepe Myrtle for example has an interesting form throughout the winter and blooms heavily in the mid-summer to early fall, the large bloom buds that are present in the early Spring mimic the look of large rose hips and are also very interesting. Weeping cherries, weeping mulberries and even weeping pussy willow trees are alive from season to season with dramatic changes, from a tree with hauntingly elegant branching  changing to colors of pink, whites and reds to an eventual tree weeping with green leaves.

Nashville Japanese Maple lighting

The unique form and wide-spreading branches of the Japanese Maple make it a perfect tree for focal tree lighting.

We use a combination of up lighting to accentuate the height and presence of the tree, well lights, wide bulbs and even moonlighting in some cases to bring out the best features of the tree your lighting. With Japanese maples for instance the best light to use is the well light. Two fixtures placed at the canopy of the tree at 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock with 60 degree wide bulbs create a mystical look when the light filters through the leaves of these exotic trees.

Nashville Crepe Myrtle tree lighting

Crepe Myrtles add interest to the landscape year round, and change season to season making them perfect for tree lighting.

No matter what species of native, ornamental or exotic tree you treasure in your landscape we can make it even more stunning by adding outdoor tree lighting. We can turn your landscape from elegant by day to stunning by night. Tree lighting will add curb appeal and make your home the envy of the neighborhood. Choosing the right tree and the right lighting element are key to beautiful tree lighting.

Nashville hackberry tree lighting

We lit the driveway with moonlights in the trees along the right side of this driveway for drama in the evening.

Trees are one of the most important parts of a beautiful landscape. They offer shade, screening, create a focal point of interest and serve as a backdrop of inspiration to other landscaping and outdoor structures. One way to create a landscape that sizzles with beauty and visual interest is to entail the use of tree lighting into your outdoor lighting design. In the Nashville area trees are among many of our scenic treasures and we have become experts at helping homeowners decide the perfect specimen tree in their landscape as a candidate for lighting.

Our tree lighting formula can accentuate the height, width and  canopy of the tree. What elements we include into lighting your individual conifer all depend on the tree itself. The shape, size and spread of the trees branches can come to life at night easily with the use of one or more of our tree lighting elements. In our experience the trees that benefit the most from tree lighting and make the most impact, or “bang for your buck”, if you will, are trees with spreading canopies. Trees that offer full spread or “vase” canopies, which means the branches spread upright,  also some weeping species make the best trees to light in your landscape. With spreading canopies, there is more room to play the light up and down through the limbs of the canopy itself. Bushier, thick limbed,  columnar trees offer little room for enhancement through tree lighting.

Nashville tree lighting

We lit the entry to this driveway from the ginkgo tree, which is a focal point of this landscape.

Moonlighting is also a viable option in tree lighting that uses the upper branches of the tree to cast light into the lower branches to light a path, or other point of interest in correlation with the tree itself. The term “moonlighting” itself lends to thoughts of mystery and romance, and that is exactly the type of light moonlighting emits. A type of unforgettable light that uses depth to cast a glow full of ambiance and haunting beauty.

If you are wondering which trees you may have in your yard that would make perfect candidates for tree lighting, we have compiled a summary of some of the trees that we often see here in the Nashville area that look beautiful with the addition of outdoor tree lighting.  Many varieties of Maples,  Oaks , Ginkgo trees and ornamental cherry trees definitely fit the bill. Other good species include  the Hackberry, Elms and Birch trees. If you are fortunate enough to have one of the weeping varieties of trees like weeping Birches, weeping Maples and  weeping Cherry trees  their unique form and branching can become a focus of drama  in your landscape with tree lighting.
