Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22nd. Remember that making a difference begins with YOU!

Earth Day 2014Today marks the 44th year we have celebrated Earth Day. I am sure you have heard about it, but do you know what it means? Or how it began?

What is Earth Day?

Every year on April 22nd, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. Just like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2014 will focus on the unique environmental challenges of our time. By taking heed as the world’s population migrates to cities, and as reality of climate change begins to come to fruition, the need to create sustainable communities is now more important than ever. Earth Day 2014 will seek to do just that through its global theme: Green Cities. The day is set aside to raise awareness of our daily impact on the world around us and how we can make a change for the better by making smart investments in sustainable technology, forward-thinking public policy, and an educated and active public, we can transform our cities and forge a sustainable future.

Silent SpringHow did Earth Day begin?

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 which  is known by many to mark the beginning of the modern environmental movement. In 1970, here in the US, the hippie movement was drawing to a close. Musicians that headed the age and mood of the time, such as Jimi Henrix and Janis Joplin, died that same year, and the Beatles released their final album. Even though protest plagued the nation, environmental concerns were not at the root of the riots. The war at Vietnam took center stage, as did all those opposed to it.

At the same time, automobiles with large V8 engines gobbled up gasoline. Industry forged on polluting the environment with smokestacks and runoff within a world where little or no recourse was sought towards the effect our actions had on the environment. This all changed as a little known book, by Rachel Carson, written in 1962 titled ” Silent Spring” sold more than half a million copies in 24 countries and began to open the eyes of our nation, and the world. Maybe more than any one single person, Ms. Carson helped to raise public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and public health.

The inaugural Earth Day held in 1970 capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center. This initiated the continuation of observing an annual Earth Day in an effort to raise awareness of the impact our actions, negative and positive, can have on the planet.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives LED path light

We offer our clients a way to invest in tomorrow through the use of “green” outdoor lighting technologies such as LED.

Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville, we take the concerns that are observed during Earth Day very seriously every day. By providing a more environmentally sustainable approach to outdoor lighting with our LED lighting technology we are striving to make a difference. LED is by far, more energy-efficient, cleaner and a more eco-friendly way of outdoor illumination than other types of lighting. LED’s have a life expectancy in excess of 50,000 hours, which means less waste from bulb replacement. In addition, LED’s do not contain toxic chemicals. Most conventional bulbs contain a multitude of materials such as mercury that are dangerous for the environment. LED is also low-voltage, and energy-efficient which will save a tremendous amount in operating costs.  We are proud to be the Nashville area’s leading force for LED outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and more sustainable than other lighting genres.

In addition we, along with our parent company, and our local manufacturing company (B&B Mfg.), are also practicing what we preach about sustainable living practices. We are operating under a “green” approach to our workplace by recycling materials such as copper fixtures. We also recycle all the paper in our office and our goal is to allocate a paperless system in the near future by incorporating tablets with each of our field workers. We are also moving towards an automatic bill pay system so we save paper by not having to send out invoices each month. We have also installed solar panels on our building as well, to reflect the importance of less impact on the environment by reducing power consumption.

We installed solar panels on our building to decrease energy usage in our workplace, and our direct impact on the environment.

By working in a field of expertise, such as outdoor lighting, that now has the technology to offer homeowners a more sustainable living product, such as upgradeable LED bulbs that never get discarded in a land-fill but can be refurbished to reuse, it is only natural to begin at the core of our business. The workplace. Hopefully, each employee, delivery-person, and individual whom frequents our office will have these sustainability practices “rub off” on he/she and take a little piece of that realization back home with them creating a ripple-effect of sustainability initiatives to live by — taking a little piece of the “Earth Day” mentality away with them for tomorrow.

Remember, that what we do today, will affect tomorrow —

There is more to the “E” in LED outdoor lighting than just what the name implies

LED architectural and facade lighting in Belle Meade by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is defined as a semiconductor light source. LEDs create light, as outlined by the Edison Tech. Center,  “by electroluminescence in a semiconductor material. Electroluminescence is the phenomenon of a material emitting light when electric current or an electric field is passed through it,  this happens when electrons are sent through the material and fill electron holes. An electron hole exists where an atom lacks electrons (negatively charged) and therefore have a positive charge. Semiconductor materials like germanium or silicon can be “doped” to create and control the number of electron holes. “Doping” is the adding of other elements to the semiconductor material to change its properties. By doping a semiconductor you can make two separate types of semiconductors in the same crystal. The boundary between the two types is called a p-n junction. The junction only allows current to pass through it one way, this is why they are used as diodes. LEDs are made using p-n junctions. As electrons pass through one crystal to the other they fill electron holes.” They emit photons which result in light! LED is available in many different colors. Different elements are used to create LED’s variance of color, such as gallium arsenide in making red and infrared LED, gallium nitride in making blue LED,  and Yttrium aluminium garnet in making white LED’s.

The Color of Quality

Some might argue,  that a light is a light. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to tell you nothing could be farther from the truth. Since outdoor lighting is all we do, we take the quality of the lighting itself very seriously. We’ve been designing and installing outdoor lighting in Nashville for over 20 years. During that time we have marveled at the advances in outdoor lighting technologies, especially when it comes to LED outdoor lighting. LED outdoor lighting has become one of the most sought after outdoor lighting genres in the business and accounts for over half of the commercial and residential installations we do. Keep in mind, that just because an LED says LED, doesn’t mean all LED’s are created equal. Unless you are a seasoned lighting professional, the lingo used to explain the different quality of LED light, and what the various “colors” associated with LED lighting mean can be overwhelming.

In the quest for the perfect color of LED outdoor lighting is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been able to achieve with our LED outdoor lighting designs. What sets our LED’s apart from the rest is our exclusive high quality fixtures made just for Outdoor Lighting Perspectives locations, and the use of Cree LED lighting technologies. Cree has revolutionized the lighting industry with high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting. The Cree advantage begins with mixing the light from red and Cree unsaturated yellow LEDs which are among the highest-performing LEDs on the market. Every Cree fixture is then color tuned as a complete system for the utmost consistency in performance. The result is beautiful white light with superior color accuracy and consistency.

Energy Efficient, Economical and Effortless

Aside from the advantages of our consistent color LED’s that enhance your home and landscape, our LED’s are also beneficial in other ways. These include energy-efficiency making them more economical to operate than traditional outdoor lighting. LED lighting is more energy-efficient and leaves less of an impact on the environment than other types of outdoor lighting.  It can save a homeowner thousands in energy costs over the LED’s lifetime. In addition, since they contain no glass components, they are not vulnerable to vibration or breakage like conventional bulbs and make the perfect lighting for outdoor applications. LED lights are free of toxic chemicals. Most conventional fluorescent bulbs contain a multitude of materials such as mercury that are dangerous for the environment and make disposal dangerous. Since they contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable, they will help you reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third. LED is safer in many regards too because it generates light from cool burning technology, and it uses less wire to install properly. Our LED outdoor lighting is also longer lasting and requires less frequent replacement making their operation seem effortless! These attributes prove that the “E” in LED means much more than just what the name implies.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville makes sense and sensibility out of the illustrious realm of LED outdoor lighting

Franklin TN LED residential outdoor lighting

The outdoor lighting at the stunning home in Franklin, TN serves as a perfect example of how you can benefit from LED outdoor lighting.

As some novices to the world of outdoor lighting would argue, a light is a light. Keep in mind, that just because an LED says LED, doesn’t mean all LED’s are created equal. Unless you are a seasoned lighting professional, the lingo used to explain the different quality of LED light, and what the various “colors” associated with LED lighting mean can be overwhelming. We are here to explain the differences in LED lighting in terms everyone can understand.

Kelvin scaleIs this rocket science, and who is Kelvin?

The quality of LED lighting is measured by color temperature. Color Temperature is a measurement that indicates the degree of color being emitted from a light source in degrees Kelvin. Much to the surprise of what the term implies, it is not a measure of temperature at all but rather a way to gauge the varying degrees of the visible color spectrum that emanates from a light source. The method behind the measurement of light began in the late 1800s, when William Kelvin experimented with heat and a block of carbon. As the he heated the carbon he noticed that it produced an array of colors as the temperature was increased. The heated carbon block first produced a dim red light and eventually a bright blue-white glow as higher temperatures were achieved. He noticed that with lower temperatures, most of the energy was converted to heat. This same principle is at work when you look into a fire as it turns from gold to blue as the heat increases.

The optimum temperature range for outdoor LED lighting is between 2800-3000 degrees Kelvin. For the LED light, there are mainly 3 kinds of white colors – warm white, natural white and cool white. These three LED’s chart the difference between a softer, warmer form of illumination (warm white light) and a sharper, colder effect (cool white). Kelvin scale measures the “color” range of LEDs. As the Kelvin goes up the light will appear more orange, whereas an increased Kelvin will make the illumination from the LED appear bluer. It is really a simple rule within a range of measurement. The most opportune aspect of good LED outdoor lighting will ensure the object you are illuminating is as close to the appearance of natural light as possible.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy-efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

Ironically, the differences in colors perfectly match the different atmospheres and how they pertain to our needs. Usually, warm white is good for indoors, as it keeps the room you are illuminating cozy and inviting. Cool white is a good choice for outdoor lighting or anywhere where you might want sharper definition and illumination, but not too cool as this will give the space a utilitarian feel.

This quest for the perfect color of LED outdoor lighting is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville has been able to achieve with our LED outdoor lighting designs. Using LED outdoor lighting technologies means less is always more

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy-efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

I revel in the amount of new products that feature the newest forms of LED lighting. Not only does LED make for an interesting selling point because it is the hot new trend, it also means you are getting the dependability of LED technology with your product. Case in point; I recently had to purchase a new refrigerator because mine went on the blink and due to its age it was more economical to just replace it. As I strolled through the endless lines of refrigerators lined up like soldiers going into battle, I noticed that most of  the higher end models included LED lighting. The salesman was quick to point this out on each model I showed interest in. He explained the benefits of LED lighting and how the appliance would be more economical to operate by having LED lights. I chose a nice model with plenty of space and LED lights in 3 locations within the fridge portion which will deliver maximum visibility on those midnight snack runs. On the way home that evening I began to scrutinize on the life expectancy of the refrigerator itself and realized the LED lighting will still be working long after the appliance has lost its ability to keep my milk cool and my ice cream frozen. This technology is a testament to the effectiveness of LED lighting as a whole and can be seen in many genres of products on the market today.

LED in my new fridge

LED lighting makes my new fridge even cooler

This same dependable lighting technology is being used in many products. The Mercedes C-class automobile was one of the first to use LED lights in its models in 2009. In an effort to make the cars more attractive to potential customers and to keep up with the LED lighting trend Mercedes added the lights to their facelift models and integrated the lights into the front bumper daytime lights. On the American home front the new kick-back of the classic Chevy Camaro even offers an interior package on their 2012 and 2013 models that includes advanced LED light pipe technology to give the interior of the cars cabin an inviting glow.

From appliances to cars, LED is all around us. The technology is evolving so rapidly that LED is becoming a part of everyday lives on many levels. Being in the business of outdoor lighting, we are able to keep up with the newest advances in LED outdoor lighting technology and at the pace we are seeing this technology unfold. Our requests for LED outdoor lighting packages are becoming more abundant every month. Part of the reason for the added interest is because LED is more within reach for the consumer. Our LED outdoor lighting designs offer beauty, longevity, durability, long bulb life and most of all savings in operational costs. LED lighting also replaces standard lighting with greener technologies that reduces our carbon footprint on the environment.

Nashville_LED_Christmas_lights_outdoor_holiday_lighting

Outdoor lighting perspectives of Nashville even offers LED holiday lighting for your home and landscape.

LED outdoor lighting customers feel the biggest bang when they get their power bill because LED lighting only costs pennies to run compared to traditional outdoor lighting operating costs. The technology uses less energy and this reflects on your electric bill each month. Less energy consumption, less bulb replacement, less negative impact on the environment all equal positive savings for the consumer. Obviously, when it comes to LED lighting less is always more.

Contact Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville to learn more about our LED outdoor lighting fixtures and our LED outdoor lighting designs. In some cases we can even retro-fit your existing system to accommodate the new LED technology as well.

Our approach to a greener workplace promotes sustainability, which affects our world on a global level.

Nowadays, everyone you talk to is discussing the importance of living in a world where sustainability practices are key to preserving our environment on a global level. Small changes in the way you live and function on a daily basis can impact the entire planet in the big scheme of things. This includes the way you function on a professional level as well. Discussing the importance of sustainable living practices is one thing, but ” talking the talk” and “walking the walk” is another. Outdoor Living Perspectives of Nashville is instilling sustainable practices in our everyday professional duties in an effort to make a habit out of trying to better our lives and the lives of our grandchildren in years to come.

We offer our clients a way to invest in tomorrow through the use of “green” outdoor lighting technologies such as LED and LCA, (lighting control automation), so we,along with our parent company, and our local manufacturing company ( B&B Mfg.), are practicing what we preach about sustainable living practices.
