Your Fall decor will get more mileage with outdoor lighting

Nashville outdoor lighting enhances seasonal outdoor decorAs the season changes, so does the exterior aesthetics of our homes. From the vibrancy of the deep greens and bright blooms of the summer landscape to the subdued hues of amber and gold as leaves begin to change and landscapes welcome autumn. One popular way we pay homage to the changing seasons is through outdoor holiday decor. Many Nashville front porches and entries are brimming with a bounty of harvest-themed decor already. Wreaths adorned with hints of Halloween will soon mingle alongside pumpkins, scarecrows and colorful mums.

Nashville Halloween LightingOutdoor lighting will ensure you home and landscape is full of curb appeal throughout the year, and will also allow you to get more enjoyment from any seasonal outdoor decorating you do. Imagine the impact outdoor lighting will create when paired with the decor and timely plantings around your home’s front entry. Colors will look bolder, textures will have more dimension and all salutations will be easily legible to guest that come to call — and don’t forget about lighting the way for those trick-or-treater’s who are soon to come calling!

In addition to highlighting your outdoor decor landscape lighting, tree lighting and even architectural lighting can also serve as a stage for the changing seasons. As your landscape changes, leaves change hues and blooms emerge, outdoor lighting can help illuminate each moment as it unfolds.

Autumn in Middle TennesseeLighting makes a huge impact as part of your landscape. Landscape lighting can be used to emphasize a fall garden or a line of deciduous trees that transform from jewel tones in the fall to barren branches in the winter.Even the smallest landscape ornamental will change personalities from spring to fall. Although your outdoor lighting stays in the same place, the area it illuminates evolves, as does the scenery.

The benefits of outdoor lighting go well beyond beautification and aesthetic enhancement. Lighting also aids in providing a more safe and secure setting for you and your family to enjoy. This includes having a more secure area to enjoy outdoor activities and relax. Security lighting such as path lighting can even makes the trip to your front door more secure because you no longer have to muddle around at a dark entrance to find your keys or while dropping shopping bags. The addition of lighting will make ease, peace of mind and convenience as a way of life. Experts are also quick to point out that outdoor lighting reduces the chances of falling victim to crime because a well-lit home, or business, is less likely to become the target of a break-in.

Although preference of LED over halogen outdoor lighting is really a matter of choice. A higher percentage of our clients opt to go with LED. It is true that LED is more energy-efficient, long-lasting and eco-friendly than traditional outdoor lighting systems; but did you also know LED is more durable? That’s right! LED lighting makes the perfect candidate for outdoor lighting because it holds up better to the harsh elements and the extreme hot and cold of seasonal changes. In additon, since LED is a UV free source of light it is less likely to attract nuisance insects. This means the insects that are drawn to your front porch or outdoor living space by light are reduced making outdoor living more enjoyable for everyone!

Endless benefits abound with Nashville backyard lighting!

backyard gazebo lightingThe best way to make your backyard look and feel like an outdoor oasis is to think about your illumination plan BEYOND the front door. If all you have is a light at your entryway and a few fixtures casting a harsh light on your home’s façade and a blaring flood light on your driveway–you are missing out a whole outdoor lighting experience that can enhance your outdoor lifestyle tremendously!

Hardworking families are spending more and more hours at the office, doing homework and running around with endless activities—and most people don’t get home until well after the sun has set. The only way to nurture time with family and friends after dusk is by lighting up the areas in your backyard you enjoy spending time.  Make your outdoor space just as useable as your indoor spaces by thinking of your outdoor landscape illumination in the same you do about inside lighting.

LandscapeLightingLots of people seem to ignore their backyards as an extension of real estate that is available for evening entertaining with their family and friends. It’s possible to light up the entire perimeter of your property and make your deck or patio a place that is just as comfortable and welcoming as your living room thanks to an outdoor lighting scheme that will make your outdoor spaces highly functional. Why sit cooped inside with the kids when everyone can be having just as much fun outdoors and getting a good dose of fresh air? Get everyone off the computer and TV and get everyone outside for family bonding and memories.

GardenPathLightsOur energy-efficient LED outdoor lighting uses very little power and brings in plenty of light so that you can hang out doing all the things your family loves to do like playing a game of football on the lawn, some Scrabble by the fire pit or dining al’ fresco while Dad is flipping burgers under some good task lighting at the grill. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville’s outdoor lighting systems are programmable, so they are designed to work to fit your lifestyle. We place lights where you need them so you can make the most out of each backyard zone that your family and friends hang out. We can drape decorative festival lighting across large expanses such as your patio or deck so that you’ve got good overhead lighting that is both elegant and practical.

Turn Your Backyard into a Staycation Paradise Well into the Evening with Outdoor Lighting

Backyard-pergola-lightingWhen properly designed and installed, your very own backyard can have such an incredible spa-like feel that it may make you feel like skipping the expensive vacation spot altogether. Your own outdoor retreat can feel like a pricey resort right at home without the hassle of passports, airports or long drives with screaming kids. The oasis can come to you and provide relaxation and entertainment well into the evening hours without the fuss and annoyances.

There are lots of inexpensive garden ideas that can help add that island staycation vibe. You can drape a hammock across two trees, or anchor it from your pergola for lazing around with an icy margarita or put in a fire pit to roast marshmallows for starters. We’re more than happy to work with you or your landscape architect to bring the staycation feel you are seeking to your outdoor living spaces with a custom outdoor lighting design and turn-key lighting program.  And with the heat and humidity in Nashville this summer, it’s a no-brainer to wait until the evening hours when things are cooler to enjoy some time outdoors.

Nashville underwater lightingOutdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville can design your landscape lighting to tie all your outdoor features together in one gorgeous way so that your backyard oasis can be enjoyed by your family and friends well into the evening in an elegant and safe way. You can stay outdoors later instead of having to go inside because the sun has gone down and you can’t see or have inappropriate flood type lighting that is severe and doesn’t get the job done. Let us illuminate your yard in a gorgeous way that makes it easy to get around your property and highlights the great features in a wonderfully dreamy and elegant way.

If a tropical feel is what you are after, then we can mimic a lighting mood that will send your senses back to island time. Overhead festival type lighting can set a party mood over your patio or deck that can make your outdoor feel like your favorite resort.

Why quit using the pool simply because it’s dark outside? We can light your pool perimeter so you can keep the party rolling well into the evening. In fact, we can add lighting to any water feature so that the unwinding sound of a waterfall or trickling water coupled with the night-time visual can have a totally mesmerizing and tranquil twilight effect. We can even light up a koi pond so that the fish can be viewed well after the nightfall.

The addition of lighting around a deck or patio gives you a place to dine and have conversation late into the night if you like. We can improve task lighting at your outdoor kitchen or barbecue so that you can cook and serve food no matter what the hour, and without having a harsh or loud glare either. We can also add some sparkle to a gazebo or pergola so that it becomes a romantic getaway spot to share with your greatest love.

If the grandkids are over, why not give them a spot to play in the evening? We can light up a horseshoe pit or even a bocce or basketball court for hours of extended night-time play. And for a real conversation centerpiece, we’ve had customers ask us to light up their beyond life-size lawn chess sets so that fierce matches can be played al fresco well past daylight hours. Neat!

Our list of Memorial Day traditions more important than just a barbecue

A Nashville native celebrating Memorial Day.

A tiny Nashville native celebrating Memorial Day.

If you look to the calendar, the official beginning of summer doesn’t start until June 21st. However, for many, Memorial Day weekend signifies the start of summer; warmer and longer days, landscapes in full-bloom and permission to wear white clothing and shoes again (until Labor Day at least). The weekend ahead will boast pool parties, barbecues and outdoor celebrations in backyards across the country as we welcome the debut of the outdoor living season.

We embrace all the camaraderie and good times that go along with Memorial Day, but we also remember the real reason for the holiday. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died while in service for their country.

Decoration DayThe origins of Memorial Day still remain a topic of debate to this day. What we do know however is that in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers note that during the Civil War organized women’s groups in the South had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers long before the tradition of commemorating our fallen heroes became what is now known as Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is observed every year on the final Monday of May. Since its birth commemorating fallen soldiers of the Civil War it is now extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service. With this in mind, we urge you to remember the brave who gave their lives so that we may live in the land of the free, on Memorial Day and every day. Here is a list of ideas for starting a tradition among in your home to honor this important holiday.

  •  Visit your local veterans cemetery. Some graves are well-maintained by family members, but when there are no living relatives, that chore falls on the shoulders of local veterans groups. Lend a hand by bringing some flowers and helping to beautify a few of the less cared-for graves.
  • Military cemetaryAttend a Memorial Day parade. This is always a big hit with the kids, and it will give the veterans marching a reason to smile. What is more American that attending a parade centered on showing pride for our country?
  • Raise a flag.  Showing your thanks and appreciation can be as simple as flying Old Glory at your house. Remember: she should remain at half mast until noon, as per tradition.
  •  Honor the National Moment of Remembrance. In 2000, Congress addressed the fact that many Americans simply use Memorial Day as a day to eat burgers. They created the National Moment to make sure our troops are honored. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, every American is asked to pause for just one minute to honor the fallen.
  • Visit a battlefield. Memorial Day owes its roots to the Civil War, and there are numerous sites up and down the East Coast where soldiers laid down their lives for us- plan a day trip with the family to learn more.
  •  Watch or Listen to the National Memorial Day Concert. This year’s concert airs at 8 p.m. E.T. on Sunday, May 25th from the West lawn of the US Capital. The Concert features music and tributes to the men and women who bravely gave their lives for their country.
  • Help others remember. Share a photo of your beloved fallen soldier/airman/sailor/etc on Facebook, Instagram or in your home so that we may never forget!

Memorial DayYour friends at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville would like to extend our appreciation for those have bravely served and died for our freedoms, and the family’s of those who have fallen. We would also like to thank all those who have served, and continue to serve — we will never forget.

The backyard barbecue: even a presidential pleasure!

Springtime means barbecue time!

Springtime means barbecue time in Nashville and all over the US!

There are few activities as rewarding this time of year as preparing meals and dining outdoors with friends and family. It seems like a “rite of passage” as we welcome the outdoor living season. As Americans, it seems we have a natural affinity to cook outdoors and especially here in the South where the backyard barbecue is considered a food group. Every culture has some version of the pursuit of outdoor cooking perfection — from the Argentinean Asado to the traditional Hawaiian luau. Rituals and traditions swirl around grilling, and outdoor food preparation.

Salmon and grilled veggies prepared on The Big Green Egg -- yummy!

Salmon and grilled veggies prepared on The Big Green Egg — yummy!

The word “barbecue” was introduced to the American colonies from Haiti which originally referred to the grilling rack, and then to the meat itself. By 1733 it also represented a social gathering that revolved around roasting an animal. By 1931, Northerners and Westerners would be using the word to describe any outdoor event involving meat and coals. (The word “Asado” has a similar dual meaning in South America, where it used to describe a grilling technique and a social function.) Not much has changed in the way we view the “act” of cooking outdoors as a time for social gatherings, our outdoor spaces have even evolved to make cooking and dining the main attraction of many American backyards– From Big Green Egg smokers to gourmet outdoor kitchens outfitted with all the bells and whistles that rival the best interior kitchen. The backyard cook out remains a tradition that centers on food, family, fun and friends!

Even our nation’s forefathers got in on the barbecue bandwagon according to research, George Washington, actually recorded all the barbecues he attended or hosted. Here is an example of one such entry from August 4, 1769, which reads: “Dined at the Barbecue with a great deal of other Company and stayed there till Sunset.” another reads “Went in to Alexandria to a Barbecue and stayed all Night.” So, not only was Washington our first president, he was also responsible for our first presidential barbecue.

George Washington grilling

Washington, our first president, was also responsible for our first presidential barbecue.

Today’s barbecue has changed in one sense, however, as it now involves preparing more than just meats. With an impetus on healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyle choices, we now enjoy many items prepared outdoors from slow-roasting chick peas for a fabulous humus to grilling delicious vegetables. There is really no limit to the culinary creations you can prepate and enjoy outdoors!

Our team here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville also loves to prepare and dine outdoors with friends and family. With that in mind, our own Bob Lyons Jr. has shared his mouth-watering recipe for roasted salmon. This recipe is a variation of a recipe taken from the Sublime Smoke cookbook, we call it “Bob’s Fab Smoked Salmon”… enjoy.
