Have you ever wondered how DST began?

DST ends tomorrow at 2AM.

DST ends tomorrow at 2AM.

Nashville and most of the United States have enjoyed an hour of extra daylight since this past spring. On November 5th, however, that will come to an end, as Daylight Savings Time (DST) officially ends for this year. The annual ritual of setting our clocks forward in the spring, and back again come fall, is something many of us take for granted but have you ever wondered how DST began?

The History of DST

Benjamin Franklin takes the credit for the idea of DST. Yes, this is the same Ben Franklin pictured on our $100 bill and who also invented the lightning rod and bifocal glasses among creating some of the most successful and popular inventions of the modern world.

Benjamin Franklin came up with concept of DSTHis idea for coming up with the idea to reset clocks in the summer months was a way to conserve energy. By moving clocks forward, people could take advantage of the extra evening daylight rather than wasting energy on lighting. At the time, Franklin was serving as ambassador to Paris and wrote a letter to the Journal of Paris in 1784, rejoicing at his discovery that the sun provides light as soon as it rises.

The practice of DST was not put to use until more than a century later when Germany began using the idea in 1916 as a way to conserve fuel during WWI. The rest of Europe quickly followed suit with the practice and in 1918 the US adopted the concept. Although President Wilson wanted to keep DST after the war ended, its practice was not embraced by all. Farmers objected to the practice citing that they would lose an hour of light in the morning. Since the US was mostly rural during this era, the practice stagnated. It was not until the next war (WWII), that the practice of DST was re-established. Following the end of WWII, states and towns were given the choice of whether to observe DST — which led to chaos.

To curb the chaos, Congress enacted the Uniform Time Act in 1966. This meant protocol must be followed in which daylight saving time would begin on the first Sunday of April and end on the last Sunday of October. Then, in 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 went into effect, expanding the length of daylight saving time to the present timing.

Why DST is Observed Today

Less than 40% of countries throughout the world observe DST. Most of the United States and Canada observe DST on the same dates. But there are exceptions. Hawaii and Arizona are the two states that don’t observe daylight saving time, though Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does follow DST, according to NASA.

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market today for outdoor lighting.

LED lights are energy efficient, long-lasting and more sustainable than other lighting genres.

The primary reason for the practice of DST has long been energy savings. Brighter evenings are said to save on lighting. However, as lighting has become super efficient in recent years, it has become a smaller element of energy consumption than it was just a few decades ago. The practice of moving an hour of sunlight from the early morning, when many would sleep through it, to the evening, when you could most likely do more with the light, and vice versa, opens up a doorway of possibilities for us to get things done. Whether it is work or school related, we have grown accustomed to having an extra hour of morning light illuminating our travel to work or school in the fall and winter months. On the opposite side of the coin, we also enjoy an extra hour of afternoon light in the spring and summer to partake in outdoor living activities.

With DST in mind, How much time will you spend this evening programming your outdoor lighting for daylight savings time? There will be multiple devices throughout your home and landscape that will require adjustment to correspond with the time and light change. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville can make sure your outdoor lighting timer isn’t one of them.

Our timers use LCA technology that automatically adjusts to facilitate the change for daylight savings time and provides automation that you will enjoy every day. It simplifies your outdoor lighting by giving you effortless control of your home’s indoor and outdoor lighting and other powered features. Our smart timer can do more than simply turn on selected lights at dusk. It can also control your indoor and outdoor electric outlets.

Did your Father’s Day outdoor celebration come and go leaving you in the dark?

Outdoor lighting nashville spa lighting

Do you regret not adding lighting to your outdoor living spaces sooner?

I know you have all heard the phrase “hindsight is 20/20”, right? The phrase is actually a proverb that teaches a moral, meaning in hindsight things are obvious which were not obvious from the outset; one is able to evaluate past choices more clearly than at the time of the choice. With this in mind, you may have in fact found yourself wishing you had moved ahead with having your outdoor lighting installed prior to this past weekend’s Father’s Day festivities — hindsight.

With all the outdoor living opportunities the warmer season brings, such as Memorial Day, Mother’s Day, Graduations, Father’s Day and Independence and Labor Day, it is a shame to have your outdoor celebrations cut short because of a lack of proper outdoor lighting. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville wants to remind you that it is not too late to make the most out of your outdoor moments spent with family and friends. Now is the time to contact us to design and install your outdoor lighting to ensure all your upcoming outdoor celebrations are set to the right light. Outdoor lighting will allow carefree spontaneity and enable you to set the time the party ends, not the setting sun!

  • Here a few scenarios where the addition of outdoor lighting would be beneficial in maximizing you and your guests’ enjoyment:
Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville deck lighting

Deck lighting will enhance the safety and function of your deck.

Outdoor lighting for your outdoor living spaces — You have an outdoor barbecue planned for family and friends. You have planned everything accordingly including a delicious menu, desserts and even backyard games for the kids! Unfortunately, you did not consider the lack of lighting on your backyard deck or patio, where the event is to take place. This is a case where professional deck, patio and landscape lighting would have been a huge benefit to the success of your gathering. We can even custom design lighting specifically for your grilling area or outdoor kitchen to give you a food preparation area that is well-illuminated. With outdoor lighting nightfall would have allowed you to remain outdoors with your guests, enjoying delicious barbecue, conversation and endless fun. If you had chosen an LED installation, which utilizes exclusive CREE LED technology, your outdoor lighting would have an added bonus: it would have meant fewer bothersome insects in your landscape and outdoor living areas than that of traditional outdoor lighting.

Nashville landscape lighting integrated with pool lighting

Enjoy all the benefits of landscape lighting integrated with pool lighting this summer!

Outdoor lighting for the areas around your pool and spa — its summertime, after all, and you decide to throw a pool party in honor of your son or daughter’s birthday! You want this occasion to be special for your child, and his/her party guests. You carefully plan the games, refreshments, paper goods, music and party favors. The day of the event arrives and you soon realize you did not consider the party would extend past dusk! You soon realize you must move the entire party indoors because the lack of visibility around your pool becomes a risk for the attendees of the party. The solution to this situation would have been the addition of water feature lighting and landscape lighting to the areas frequented around your pool. Lighting would have made your pool area safer for party-goers, giving you peace of mind and delivering a one-of-a-kind party the kids will remember forever!

Guest house outdoor lighting

Guest house and cottage outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting for the areas around your guest house or cottage — You have company coming in from out-of-town this season, which will be staying in your guest house or cottage. You may have an exterior building on your grounds that has great architectural flair or that it visited often at night. It could be a guest house, cottage or some other type of outdoor building. You have the accommodations prepared for the comfort of your guests in mind, neat as a pin and ready for their anticipated arrival. Unfortunately you did not consider how dark entering and exiting the guest quarters could be for your friends or family to allow them to make themselves at home. One of the best ways to alleviate dark pathways that lead to and from your home to other structures on your property is by the addition of path lighting. Our path lighting casts a gentle glow downward on the path and adjoining landscaping making evening travel safe and relaxed. You don’t want any overly bright light to obscure night-time vision, overpower the surroundings or lose the romantic effect that you have with such beautiful structures on a property — our path lighting delivers safety and style!

Patio outdoor lighting

This beautifully illuminated outdoor living room is bathed in rich , romantic energy-efficient low voltage outdoor lighting Perspectives.

We hope these “real life” outdoor living scenarios have helped your realize just how much adding outdoor lighting could benefit you, your family and any guests that visit your home this season, and throughout the year.

Now that you’ve seen your home in lights, you can have this type of magic all year round

holiday OLP garland

A mesmerizing holiday outdoor lighting display that inspires you is unforgettable.

The holiday season is now in full swing, and many homeowners have their homes, lawns and landscapes adorned with awe-inspiring outdoor holiday lighting. Many people only choose to illuminate their home and landscapes for the holiday season, foregoing a chance to capture the ambiance and feeling that year-round outdoor lighting can add to your most precious of investments. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville is here to make your property more magical each and every evening, not just during Christmas, with outdoor lighting.

The addition of lighting a specific location focuses your eye on that location and makes it the focal point. Much the same can be said about professional outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting can be used to define the lines, architecture, and nuances that make your home’s beauty and unique characteristics shine through. Well designed and placed outdoor lighting can make your home even more stunning in the evening than it is during the day. Landscape and garden outdoor lighting can make your backyard and landscape appear to be a lush outdoor oasis, giving rise to beauty not seen in the light of the daytime. Expertly designed and executed outdoor lighting can give the appearance of light dancing from one beautiful focal point to the other. Along with the beauty that comes along with having professional outdoor lighting, there are other benefits as well.

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting

Nashville Outdoor Lighting - Architectural Outdoor Lighting can create ambiance year round.

In many homes across Nashville, the homeowners have access to a virtual playground in their very own backyards. From pools and luscious spas that offer a place to renew your soul, to gorgeous patios and outdoor porches that serve as gathering spots for your family and friends. Without proper outdoor lighting these extensions of outdoor living and recreation cannot be enjoyed to their fullest extent. A well-lit outdoor entertaining area, or pool and spa area means that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor into the evening without the stress of looking at the clock. Your backyard will not only be well illuminated, adding the element of outdoor lighting to areas such as pools and spas creates an ethereal ambiance that only beautiful lighting can provide.

Outdoor lighting also paves the way to more fun and playful opportunities to enjoy your landscape in the evening. With outdoor lighting the gang can throw the pigskin around during halftime on that Monday night game and not have to worry about tripping over your prized rose bushes or passing it in the dark. With outdoor lighting your outdoor activities can extend well into the evening and expand your outdoor living enjoyment.

A well lit pool and surround means safety and beauty

Having the added benefit of a safer home is also great incentive to install outdoor lighting at your home year round. Not only does a properly lit sidewalk welcome guests to your door with hospitality, it also reduces the risk of falls due to low visibility. A well-lit exterior also lessens the risk of a robbery or break in. Our outdoor lighting can be programmed to operate on a regular schedule to ensure you are never left in the dark. In the same token, that same lighting control automation technology we use to program your outdoor lighting timer can also be programmed to give the appearance that someone is always home – even if you are on vacation in a tropical paradise thousands of miles away. Our lighting control technologies can be accessed by a simple touch of a button via your smart phone. Safety, convenience and peace of mind are just a few of the benefits of having professional outdoor lighting.

Loveliest holiday lighting ever

Our holiday lighting program delivers elegant and classic designs, but space is limited so contact us today.

Not too many Christmases ago I remember the hot toy on every kids wish list was the “Tickle me Elmo” doll. This little cute and cuddly version of the beloved character from “Sesame Street” was making headlines all across the world. I remember watching the evening news and seeing riots occurring because the stores were sold out of the little chuckling creature. The demand for the Elmo doll simply exceeded the supply and with any great holiday invention, product or service getting the goods early will save a huge amount of stress and even sadness on Christmas morning.  Any seasoned holiday shopper realizes the value of getting the “hot” items on everyone’s Christmas wish list first. The same can be said for waiting until the last-minute to schedule your professional holiday lighting design and installation in time for Christmas. Scoring an installation of well designed professional outdoor holiday lighting this time of year and is based on a first come first serve basis which means that waiting too long may lead to disappointment when it comes time to turn on your holiday lighting. We are already scheduled for installations into November.

Nashville Outdoor Lighting Perspectives is breathing new energy saving life into old fixtures by retrofitting to LED

Outdoor stair lighting Nashville

Lighting along these steps is not only beautiful but offers a safety factor.

It is now possible to retro-fit your old outdoor lighting fixtures and turn them into LED fixtures. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville  is offering this to customers who want to make the change over to LED without having to start all over with a new system. We can usually retro-fit about 95% of our lighting and we can retro-fit our competitors lighting in most cases following a thorough inspection.

We have made the transition an easy one. We simply remove the internals of  your existing fixtures and retro-fit them with LED internals. When we come out to complete a conversion we also check your transformer and adjust the voltage, re-cover any exposed wiring, reset timers and review this with you and introduce any timer or fixture upgrades available for your specific needs, adjust all your fixtures and even do any light trimming of landscaping to allow your fixtures to achieve the best effect. Our retro-fit conversions also carry a three-year warranty on the lamps with an option to receive lifetime warranties on the entire system with a yearly checkup by an Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville representative as well.

Conversion to LED can cut the power consumption and extend the life of your outdoor lights dramatically. A good example is if a client has 20 outdoor lighting fixtures on their property at 35 watts per fixture, that equals out to a total of 700 watts. With our LED  retro-fitting conversion we can achieve the desired lighting effect with the total wattage coming out to a mere 120 watts! This Elegant Home in Belle Meade, TN Will See Things in A Whole New Light

Exquisitely appointed pool lighting

Exquisitely appointed pool lighting

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville recently re-visited the always beautiful neighborhood of Belle Meade to install outdoor lighting and lighting control. These homeowners had quite a large distance between their residence and their pool and pool house. Simply put they were tired of walking to the pool in the dark to turn the lights on. Not only was this a safety issue it was also an inconvenience that we were able to easily remedy by applying lighting control.

Another well lit pool house/cabana and pool area

Another example of a well-lit pool house/cabana and pool area

All the existing lighting had been controlled from within the pool house itself and required maneuvering through the night to finally reach the switch to illuminate the area. This is very similar in relation to an individual having a detached garage or guest house with the same issues. Our goal was to ensure these homeowners would be able to control their lights at the pool, the pool house and the path that led to both from their residence in order to pre-light these areas so they could go and to and from the pool safely and with ease.

A well lit pool and surround means safety and beauty

A well-lit pool and surround means safety and beauty

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville gave the homeowners the ability to control each area separately, or turn the areas as a whole on or off together. They can turn on the lights at the pool, the tree lighting around the pool, the down lighting around the pool and the pathway which leads to the pool. We also tied in the lighting in their lovely rose garden. The plan for the near future is to tie all of these lights into the automation, including  the lights around the main residence as well for worry free convenience and safety.

Moonlighting in Nashville’s Belle Meade Anyone?

Driveway_lighting_created_by_downlighting_or_moon_lighting_trees_gracing_driveway(2)

The stately trees that grace this driveway for our customer in Belle Meade are perfect for moonlighting

The art of moonlighting is a creative medium in itself. The type of illumination that comes from moonlighting gives off an ethereal effect that cannot be duplicated by any other lighting technique. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville was recently selected to install moonlighting for an owner in Belle Meade.

The homeowner wanted to illuminate the driveway. Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville we try to avoid having a fixture out in the open because not only does it become a tripping hazard it is susceptible to damage from mowers, aerators, edgers and other machinery. We suggested moonlighting the large trees that grace the driveway, this would effectively light the long driveway and give a soothing, romantic light as well.

The homeowner allowed  John Groce of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville  to serve as contractor on the job, thus we were able to line up the electrician and the irrigation company to  under the sidewalk. The electrician had already been there previously and ran power to the trees. Sandra Nichols Landscaping was the landscaper on the job and we worked hand in hand during the progression.

Nashville_landscape_lighting

Landscape lighting by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville

Since the electrician had run power from the house to the trees there is a receptacle at the trees. These are done on all 120 volt, line voltage and is a different fixture which uses a ballast to power the bulbs. The bulbs are all ceramic metal halide. Ceramic metal halide are the same type of bulbs used in jewelry and grocery stores and are coveted for their high score on the CRI (color rendering index). The light itself is still low-wattage, at only 39 watts, they still put out an enormous amount of light. As an example of the amount and quality these lights emit, you could hold 30 pieces of blue string in all variations in your hand, and in the noon day sun you could clearly see each variation from string to string. The same clarity is apparent under the moonlighting as well.

We are planning on using the current timer the customer has inside the home to hook in the moonlights for control. We had previously completed the lighting in this customers backyard as well.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville worked hand-in-hand with Sandra Nichols Landscaping

Just as we had previously worked with this homeowner before, we enjoyed working with her once again on this moonlighting application. We want to commend Sandra Nichols Landscaping as well. This very stately driveway on this very stately property is now complete with the ambiance of the moonlighting, another job well done!

When Building an Outdoor Structure Call Your Lighting Specialist First

Deck post lighting sconce

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville we can’t emphasize how important it is to call in your lighting company before you build your outdoor structure. Most of the time your wish is  to make  sure your wiring is  hidden instead of exposed. Once construction on your structure is completed it is very difficult to hide the wiring. If your lighting company is informed ahead of time , they can make certain that everything is neatly hidden from the naked eye, and still ensure the integrity and safety of the lights themselves.

When our customers let us know before they begin construction on their outdoor structure we can customize their lighting on a whole different level, that’s why it is important to not wait until the structure is completed. For example with a new deck, we can make sure conduit is run throughout the entire decking system and have it pre-wired to accommodate your chosen fixtures. This approach ensures that no additional drilling is necessary, and you get a more secure fitting fixture in the process.

Our half-moon wall sconce light for decks shown here in copper

When we talk about deck lighting there are a wide variety of fixtures that we really like to use. All of our fixtures are high quality and come in your choice of copper, nickel or antique brass. One of which is the half-moon deck light. The product description in our catalog for the half-moon light says it all…” This understated but powerful light casts the industry’s widest indirect wash from its perch upon deck posts and retaining walls. The half-moon sconce creates rich ambient light, and the beautiful copper finish weathers the element with grace”.  Our fixtures can also be powder coated, dipped and oxidized. Oxidation will turn them a rich deep bronze, which by far is our most popular finish in deck lighting. We also carry step lights which are installed in the riser. We carry one with a Louvered  face plate and also a scoop face plate.

If a deck is in your future, remember to call your lighting specialist before you begin so they can work with your builder. If you are looking for a lighting specialist, give Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Nashville a call to discuss your lighting needs.John Groce Outdoor Lighting Perspectives Nashville (615) 373 – 0638

Nashville flooding your lights

I hope all of you are doing well and slowly putting the pieces of your property back together after the storm and flooding. We are beginning to receive phone calls from past clients stating the flood waters  have washed away their landscaping along with their lighting.

As we all know this is way down on the list of importance but we still want you to know that we are here to help put your property back the way it was before the storms. If your outdoor lighting system is gone or not working properly we will be happy to help service the system for you.

As one client has called in to let us know that his entire system has been washed way with the storm – we will be giving him a free assessment and reinstalling his entire system and honoring the original pricing for his job. Please give us a call if you have any questions and we will be happy to help in anyway to restore your property to its pre-storm condition.
